Burnley and Bristol City are both looking for new managers ahead of the 2026/27 Championship season.
The Clarets have been demoted from the Premier League to the second division, while the Robins are expected to finish in the middle of the Championship table.
Burnley parted ways with Scott Parker following their relegation, and the West Country club fired Gerhard Struber in March after a bad run of results.
Bristol City has been led by former England manager Roy Hodgson in an interim capacity for the latter stages of the season, but they must now find a permanent replacement for Struber.
Burnley may no longer stand in Bristol City’s way of Steven Gerrard, with an alternative appointment eyed.

Struber was fired by the Robins after only one win in nine games across all competitions, while the Ashton Gate club entered the season with the goal of making the Championship play-offs for the second year in a row.
However, the ex-Barnsley manager may feel unfairly treated because the West Country club’s decline was partly caused by the sale of previous top players Anis Mehmeti and Zak Vyner to Ipswich Town and Wrexham, respectively, during the winter transfer window.
Meanwhile, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke via X, Steven Gerrard is in the running to become Bristol City’s next manager.
However, according to Sacha Tavolieri, Burnley has begun conversations with Gerrard’s representatives in an effort to bring the former Rangers manager to Turf Moor.
Joining the Clarets over the Robins would make more practical sense for the Liverpudlian due to the Turf Moor club’s North West location.
However, according to BBC Sport, Wales manager Craig Bellamy has emerged as a strong candidate for the Burnley position, perhaps allowing Bristol City to complete their approach for Gerrard.
The former Liverpool star has had a checkered management career to far, winning the Scottish Premiership title with Rangers in 2021 but struggling in the Premier League and Saudi Pro League with Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, respectively.
Meanwhile, Bellamy remains a popular figure in the Wales squad, despite the fact that he failed to lead his team to the World Cup this summer, losing in a play-off semi-final to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Bristol City may be better off getting John Mousinho to go to Ashton Gate rather than chasing Steven Gerrard’s job.

As previously stated, while Gerrard has piqued the interest of Burnley and the Robins, his management record at Villa and in Saudi Arabia leaves much to be desired.
Meanwhile, according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook on X, Bristol City are also interested in signing Portsmouth manager John Mousinho.
Unlike Gerrard, Mousinho has Championship experience and has successfully led Pompey out of relegation danger for two seasons in a row.
The 40-year-old has called for greater investment from the Fratton Park club’s owner, Michael Eisner, but in an interview with BBC Radio Solent, the Portsmouth manager stated that he is not desperate to leave the South Coast.
Mousinho may also be disappointed by Bristol City owner Steve Lansdown’s failure to back Struber this season.
However, the former Oxford United player’s track record in charge of Pompey shows that he is a better prospect than Gerrard to lead the Ashton Gate club forward, assuming they can persuade him to leave Fratton Park.
Meanwhile, if Bristol City believe Gerrard is the best option to move them ahead despite his faults in previous years, Burnley’s renewed interest in Bellamy will help them land the Liverpool player.
