Coventry City have only been in the Premier League for 24 hours, but they have already made their first signing.
The Sky Blues have not played in the top division in 25 years, but with promotion confirmed following Friday’s 1-1 draw against Blackburn, Frank Onyeka has joined the club permanently.
At the end of the winter transfer window, the midfielder joined Coventry on loan from Brentford until the end of the season.
As part of the agreement, if Coventry was promoted to the Premier League, they were required to sign Onyeka permanently.
The sum is unknown, but the 43-cap Nigeria international has played an important role for Frank Lampard’s side in the Championship’s final stages.
He has made 12 appearances for Coventry, starting 11 of them, and his single goal came in a 3-2 win over Derby earlier this month.
The Sky Blues have yet to confirm the deal, but when they announced Onyeka’s loan signing, they stated that his temporary stay would be extended permanently.
They stated: “Frank Onyeka has joined Sky Bet Championship club Coventry City on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.”The agreement includes an obligation to make the move permanent if the Sky Blues gain promotion to the Premier League this season.”
Famous night.
Coventry’s 1-1 draw against Blackburn at Ewood Park was enough to secure promotion.
Bobby Thomas scored, sending 7,000 Coventry fans into a frenzy that lasted long after the game ended.
And it proved to be an emotional moment for Lampard, who held back tears after the game.

He stated: “We weren’t at our fluid best but the quality of the ball in and the power of the header.”We had to wait it out and weren’t sure whether to assault.”This is what it is about. It is difficult to come here and make a point at this level. For doing this after 25 years, wow. Wow. “I’m proud of both myself and the crew. When we arrived in a people carrier 15 months ago, we were unsure of what to expect. We’ve fallen in love, and this ranks right up there with everything I’ve accomplished. “I am very proud to be the manager.”
Coventry will now focus on securing the Championship championship, needing only one more win from their final three games.
