Tonda Eckert reveals the latest twist in Southampton’s team news ahead of the Norwich City match.

Southampton will look to maintain their recent momentum when they play Norwich City at St Mary’s in the Championship on Wednesday night.

Southampton’s promotion ambitions appeared to be lost after a seven-game winless streak during the winter period, which put pressure on head coach Tonda Eckert, but an exceptional run of form in recent weeks has rekindled their season.

The Saints extended their unbeaten streak to ten league games with a 2-1 win over leaders Coventry City at the CBS Arena on Saturday, with goals from Flynn Downes and Kuryu Matsuki securing all three points, despite Victor Torp’s late penalty setting up a nail-biting finale.

Southampton are now seventh in the Championship table, three points behind sixth-placed Wrexham, but that margin could widen to six by the time they face Norwich, depending on how the Red Dragons do against Watford on Tuesday night.

It will be a difficult task for the Saints against a Canaries side that has been revitalised since the arrival of Philippe Clement in November, and while they are currently in 12th place, they may believe they still have a slim chance of making the play-offs after a run of 10 wins in their last 13 league games.

Southampton’s hopes of a favorable result in midweek may have been boosted significantly after Eckert offered an update on the fitness of winger Leo Scienza and striker Ross Stewart.

Tonda Eckert provides a positive Southampton injury update concerning Leo Scienza and Ross Stewart.

Southampton may have had a rocky season, but Scienza has been one of their most consistent performances since his summer arrival from Heidenheim, with the 27-year-old scoring six goals and assisting eight times in 33 games.

Stewart may have taken a bit longer to get going during an injury-plagued period at St Mary’s, but the Scot has played a crucial role in his team’s recent recovery, scoring four goals in his last 12 games.

Eckert intimated that Scienza and Stewart, who missed Saturday’s triumph against Coventry due to injury, could play a role in the upcoming match against Norwich. Additionally, other Southampton squad members are expected to be fit.”Leo [Scienza] and Ross [Stewart] have performed well today, and we’ll see what happens tomorrow,” Eckert told the Southern Daily Echo.Mads [Roerslev] will take a little longer, so his boot is still on his foot. I believe it will be another week until it happens.

“Jay [Robinson] has now been with the club for the first training session, and it’s great to have him back on the pitch. It was his second session today.

Weli [Welington] will have his first session with us on Thursday, so gradually ease him back in.”

Southampton will feel enormous comfort after Leo Scienza and Ross Stewart’s injury announcement.

As Southampton climbs the table, the last thing they need is major player injuries that could stymie their momentum at this critical juncture in the season.

Given Scienza’s importance to the squad, losing him for any length of time would have been catastrophic for the Saints, and Stewart’s injury history raises the prospect of a long-term absence whenever he is sidelined.

However, Eckert’s update suggests that the duo may be available for Wednesday’s game against Norwich, and even if they are unable to play against the Canaries, their injuries do not appear to be cause for concern among Southampton fans.
