A 135-year-old EFL Championship stadium was set on fire early this morning, leading to the suspension of this weekend’s fixtures.

Macclesfield has advised residents to keep away from their stadium after it was set on fire.

In a statement issued early Tuesday morning, the National League North club stated that a suspected arson attempt had occurred at Moss Rose.

According to the press release, emergency services responded to the blaze, which began on Monday evening or early Tuesday morning.

Flames were seen coming from the ground, which was dubbed the Leasing.com Stadium due to sponsorship.

Macclesfield assured supporters that the issue was under control, with no casualties and an inquiry into the source of the fire ongoing.

Fans were advised to avoid the area, while locals were instructed to keep windows closed and not approach the stadium while emergency services were in operation.

The club’s statement read: “Macclesfield FC are aware of a suspected arson attempt at the Leasing.com Stadium in the late hours of yesterday evening/early hours of this morning.”Emergency services are currently fighting the blaze in the impacted districts.Despite understandable fear, we ask that everyone avoid the area. Please keep windows closed and avoid approaching the stadium as it may hamper emergency services. We want to reassure everyone that the matter is under control.

“There are no casualties and investigations are already underway into the cause of the fire.”We’d like to thank everyone for their concern and the rapid response of individuals who contacted emergency services.

“Macclesfield FC will be making no further comment at this stage whilst the investigation develops.”

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that two Macclesfield engines had responded to the location after flames were visible over a Moss Rose stadium wall.

They confirmed that an outbuilding adjacent to the club’s shop had taken fire.

According to the agency, two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel water jets to extinguish the fire and remained on the site until 4:30 a.m.

Moss Rose is one of England’s oldest football stadiums, having served as Macclesfield Town’s long-term home from 1891 until the club’s dissolution in 2020.

It later became the home of Macclesfield FC.

Macclesfield last played at home a fortnight ago, losing 4-1 to Fylde on February 24.

Prior to this, the sixth-tier club captivated the nation with their remarkable FA Cup run.

They hosted Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Brentford in the competition, defeating the holders before being eliminated by the Bees in a spirited 1-0 loss on February 16.
