Sheffield Wednesday are looking for a free agent signing a week after the January transfer window closed, as the Owls move closer to relegation to League One.
Following a 4-0 defeat to Swansea City on Sunday, the South Yorkshire club is aware that they might be relegated at Bramall Lane in little under two weeks, and Henrik Pedersen is eager to prolong the inevitable in S6.
Yan Valery’s departure to Swiss club Young Boys has freed up space in the Owls’ depleted squad, and their head coach indicated following their defeat in South Wales that they can now sign a free agent to help fill that need.
Football League World has looked at three unattached individuals who Sheffield Wednesday could sign in the coming days as they prepare to host Millwall at Hillsborough this weekend.
3Onel Hernandez

Onel Hernandez spent the first part of the season at Charlton Athletic, but after just six appearances, the winger left The Valley at the end of January and is now looking for a new team.
The 33-year-old has made 210 Championship matches and won promotion once with Norwich City. He made 29 Premier League appearances as the Canaries were demoted to the second division, but he would be a fantastic addition to Pedersen’s squad.
Sheffield Wednesday is depending on several young players to help fill out their squad, and having a guy like Hernandez in their ranks would be ideal for the Owls as they attempt to add more seniority to the club. The former Middlesbrough player would also benefit from playing time at this level as he seeks a more permanent destination in the future.
2Kyle Naughton

Kyle Naughton has been without a club since the summer, having departed Swansea after a 10-year spell in South Wales, and while there will be fitness issues, he would be the most comparable replacement at Hillsborough following Valery’s departure.
Sheffield Wednesday are looking for a new full-back, and the 37-year-old has a wealth of experience that would be highly valuable in S6 for the final few months of the season.
However, Naughton, who was born in Sheffield, has a deep connection to the Blades. He joined the club when he was six years old and left after a few years to join Tottenham Hotspur. However, with game time nearly guaranteed, he may be inclined to make an approach.
1Lucas Andersen

Another player who has been without a club in 2025/26, Lucas Andersen, has been looking for a new team since the summer, and Sheffield Wednesday could give him with a suitable home till the conclusion of the season.
In his first season in the Championship with QPR in 2023/24, the Dane scored once and assisted four times in only 16 appearances. However, he was unable to repeat that form the previous time out. Nevertheless, the 31-year-old still has a lot to contribute.
He will be eager to play at the highest level possible and demonstrate to potential clubs that he is talented enough to play in England’s second division. Andersen may also provide Sheffield Wednesday with much-needed midfield depth, as well as help with their goal-scoring issues.
