EFL issues sanction against Portsmouth following ‘ridiculous’ Ipswich Town incident at Fratton Park

Portsmouth and Ipswich have had to postpone their match on the South Coast for the second time this season due to pitch conditions, which is far from ideal.

Their first game was scheduled for January 4th, but referee Leigh Doughty deemed the pitch unplayable due to freezing conditions, infuriating the travelling team and fans who had already begun their journey down to Pompey long before the decision was made.

Surprisingly, that was not the end of the issue, as the rearranged fixture, scheduled for February 3rd, was also called off, this time due to a wet pitch, despite Portsmouth’s claims that they did all necessary to make the game happen.

This time, a decision was made well before Ipswich fans were slated to leave, but it hasn’t stopped Tractor Boys supporters from airing their emotions.

It was the first time a fixture had to be postponed at Fratton Park owing to a soggy pitch in almost 13 years, and now that the tie is set to be rescheduled, cries for retribution from the visiting party have emerged.

Ipswich Town fan commentator demands for Pompey punishment after the second fixture postponement in less than a month.

Adam, Football League World’s Ipswich fan commentator, has shared his thoughts on the most recent postponement of their away match against Portsmouth, as well as whether a punishment is warranted given that this is the second time this has occurred.

Adam said, “I think it’s a very rare situation in football where games are postponed twice in a row, and I really feel for the fans who had started traveling down; at least this time it was called off with a little more time in hand, but I think there has to be punishments by the EFL if this happens, whether it’s fines or maybe not as severe as point deductions.”I don’t think giving the game to Ipswich is probably a fair thing, but the idea of moving it to a stadium that has the facilities and isn’t going to be canceled, but I think there’s a bigger problem in that the Championship should have better pitch regulations and pitch quality.””When you are promoted to the Premier League, there are a number of regulations that must be met, including broadcast obligations.”I don’t see why there shouldn’t be a similar set of Championship standards that include pitch conditions, because having a match called off twice due to pitch conditions is ludicrous in this day and age.”

Kieran McKenna will be upset with the second Portsmouth postponement, with Ipswich Town in the midst of a promotion battle.

Few people would be more upset with Ipswich’s most recent postponement away to Portsmouth than head coach Kieran McKenna.

Along with their first and second postponements away to Portsmouth, they have also had to replay their away tie against Blackburn Rovers, which was abandoned late in the game at Ewood Park in September with the Tractor Boys down 1-0.

They were behind 1-0 again, but a late Sindre Walle Egeli goal tied the game at 1-1 and earned them a point.

This means that Ipswich’s fixtures have been abandoned or postponed three times this season alone, in an unparalleled sequence of events.

It is unclear when their rescheduled encounter with Portsmouth will take place, but in the meantime, the Tractor Boys will believe it is acceptable to punish Pompey for failing to offer a viable playing service twice in less than a month.

Indeed, Portsmouth can do little to help with the weather, and given that it would have been their third home game in less than ten days, the scenario could be considered as extremely unlucky.

However, with Ipswich fighting for first place in the division, they will have little sympathy for Pompey, as McKenna has had to cancel his team’s preparations for their away trip to Fratton Park for the second time this season.

It is unclear whether Portsmouth will face any punishment; both sides will be frustrated by the events, but Ipswich will be more so.
