A reporter for Sky Sports provides an update on Leicester City’s manager search.

Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports has provided an update on Leicester City’s most recent managerial search.

The journalist claims that while the management in this region of the East Midlands continues to search for Marti Cifuentes’ long-term replacement, the Foxes will be managed by club legend and first-team coach Andy King during their forthcoming match against Charlton Athletic at the King Power Stadium.

Due in large part to their recent history and the players who stayed at the King Power after Cifuentes’ appointment last June, Leicester has had a disappointing return to the Championship. Many outsiders predicted that they would launch a continuous promotion drive at the beginning of the season.

The Foxes are currently sitting in mid-table as the first month of 2026 draws to a close since the former Queens Park Rangers manager was unable to turn his prior efforts at Loftus Road into a successful tenure with the team.

A 2-1 home loss to Oxford United, who achieved their first win under newly hired manager Matt Bloomfield, was the last straw for Cifuentes.

Sam Long and Mark Harris’ goals proved to be Leicester’s downfall once more, and the outcome only contributed to Cifuentes’ incredibly bad run of form at the end of his ten second-tier games in command.

Since then, a few names with different degrees of English and European football experience have been linked to the open position, though it’s safe to assume that not all of those have been well received by a fan base that is already split.

Additionally, it looks like fans will have to wait until at least the first week of February to find out who Leicester’s fifth permanent manager has been since May 2024, when they won the Championship under Enzo Maresca, with a pivotal match against the Addicks hanging big.

A writer for Sky Sports provides an update on Leicester City’s most recent management search, citing multiple candidates.

As was already noted, a number of possible candidates have been quickly linked to the Leicester position; the first to be reported were Gary Rowett and Derek McInnes.

After being fired by Oxford on December 23 and eventually replaced by the aforementioned Bloomfield at the Kassam Stadium earlier this month, Rowett is now available on the managerial market. Meanwhile, the latter is currently leading a Scottish Premiership title charge with Hearts after they signed a new long-term contract at the end of the previous season.

The 51-year-old, however, held his cards very close to the vest when questioned about any connections to the coaching position at his former club, for which he played 57 games between 2000 and 2002.

Prior to Leicester offering Cifuentes a three-year initial contract at the King Power, Russell Martin was mentioned as a possible replacement for Ruud Van Nistelrooy last summer. The former Southampton and Rangers manager has now been linked to the position once more after being unemployed for three months.

Additionally, it was revealed that Chris Coleman is one of the front-runners for the position, having previously worked with OH Leuven, Leicester’s sister club, and being seen as a possible mentor for the aforementioned King, who Foxes executives highly regard for his coaching abilities.

Coleman’s Wales team, which advanced to the UEFA Euro 2016 semi-finals, included King, indicating a pre-existing link between the two. Additionally, Vitor Pereira, a former Wolves player, is apparently being considered by Leicester for their next hire.

However, according to Dorsett, the Leicester management is still compiling a shortlist of long-term candidates, and King is anticipated to take over against Nathan Jones’ Charlton team on Saturday lunchtime.

When Leicester City plays Charlton Athletic, fans will be hoping for an instant reaction from their team.

With 17 games left, Leicester is currently in 14th place in the Championship, six points outside of the play-off spots and nine points above the relegation zone.

They must react right away to the events that have occurred in the East Midlands this week. It is also an opportunity for King to demonstrate why his coaching abilities are so highly regarded.

Even though fans are understandably irritated and worried about the team’s current circumstances both on and off the field, including worries about a points deduction, it would at least temporarily improve the atmosphere if City managed to secure their 11th league victory before focus shifts back to who the new manager or head coach might be.
