Ipswich Town transfer twist involving Rangers FC, Sheffield United’s issue with Sunderland

Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil is attracting interest from the Championship, while Rangers are also interested in a player who made only four appearances in 2025/26.

Neil has made 201 appearances for the Black Cats throughout his career and has sparked serious interest from a number of clubs in recent weeks.

He helped his childhood team get out of League One and the Championship, appearing as a regular starter in both campaigns and every season in between. However, he is no longer in favour with Regis Le Bris.

According to Mike McGrath’s report on Friday evening, the South Shields-born ace did not travel to East London with the rest of Sunderland’s squad when his team visited West Ham United.

Ipswich Town are leading Rangers and Sheffield United in the race to capture Dan Neil.

Coventry and Sheffield United like Sunderland’s Neil, but second-tier interest extends beyond that. Neil is also rated by Leicester City and West Brom, and the 24-year-old appears to be on his way out of the Black Cats shortly.

According to The Star on Saturday, Rangers have grabbed the lead in the race to recruit Neil, as former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl aims to bolster his side as they chase Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Pete O’Rourke then stated that West Ham are one of the teams in the running, with Nuno Espirito Santo looking to strengthen further in January. However, the most recent development includes another second-tier team.

According to The Daily Record, Ipswich Town has entered the battle to sign the midfielder. In fact, the Suffolk club is said to have jumped ahead of the competition after making a move for the 24-year-old over the weekend.

Neil is out of contract this summer, and it is now believed that Kieran McKenna’s Championship high-flyers are in pole position to recruit him in the last week of the transfer market.

Dan Neil, a Sunderland midfielder, may be a good addition for Ipswich Town.

Ipswich have three major midfielders in their double pivot, with Azor Matusiwa, Jack Taylor, and Jens Cajuste all contending for two starting positions. Neil may, however, contribute something unique to the mix.

The midfielder is comfortable on the ball and will provide valuable leadership and experience for such a young player. Neil only recently turned 24, and his best years are ahead of him.

The level of attention shows how talented he is, but Ipswich will now want to win the race. He is a high Championship prospect and a well-known commodity, and Ipswich may still require a long-term midfield replacement for Sam Morsy.

Neil’s promotion-winning expertise is sure to appeal to McKenna following a rebuild of Ipswich’s team over the previous summer, and his nous and pedigree could be desperately needed at Portman Road.
