The 24-year-old joined at Home Park on loan from Norwich City in 2022, but went on to play a key role in Argyle’s title-winning season, scoring six goals and providing seven assists in 41 league appearances.
Plymouth made the move permanent that summer, and Mumba has been a rock for all five managers he’s worked for over the following two and a half years.
Unfortunately, the wide man’s development was hampered in the Championship due to frequent managerial changes, and when the Pilgrims were relegated to League One, second-tier clubs showed little interest in his services.
After suffering in League One, Mumba is set to start a new chapter with Lee Grant’s Huddersfield, hoping to recover some of the form he exhibited during his early Argyle days.
Bali Mumba’s departure ‘no huge surprise’ for Plymouth Argyle supporters

After Football League World exclusively revealed Mumba’s impending move to Huddersfield, we spoke with our resident Green Army member, Luke Hodge, to get his instant reaction to the transaction.
Luke told us: “I don’t think it comes as a surprise to any Argyle fan that Bali is set to go during this transfer window. He has 18 months left on his contract, and barring Lorent Tolaj is reportedly worth £1 million to Huddersfield and is considered the club’s most valuable player.Bali has been a ghost of the guy we saw in League One a couple of seasons ago. This is not due to a lack of effort, but rather a loss of spark and difficulty to establish consistent form.”I believe it’s a good move for both the club and the player if the £1 million can be reinvested in the team and used to acquire important players in other positions.”Huddersfield Town are a rival club that is largely insignificant. “It would be great to see him go there, put a smile on his face, and start producing the type of performances that we’ve all seen in the past.””He’s young enough, and I’m confident he’ll succeed and do well there,” Luke said.
£1 million fee for Bali Mumba deemed ‘absolutely reasonable’

It is now known that Huddersfield would spend around £1 million to transfer Mumba to Yorkshire, which is close to the cost paid by Argyle to sign him permanently from Norwich in summer 2023.
This may come as a disappointment to some Plymouth fans, especially if you had told them when they signed him. However, Luke believes the sum is more than reasonable given Mumba’s current circumstances at Home Park.
When we queried Luke about the reported amount, he said: “If it’s £1 million as reported by Sky Sports, I believe we paid equivalent or slightly more for him.
“But with 18 months left on his contract, he hasn’t produced the same sort of form as he did a couple of seasons ago, so I think £1m is a perfectly acceptable amount to receive from Huddersfield for him.”As I have stated, reinvesting that back into the squad to perhaps bolster a few of positions makes sense for everyone.”
Overall, it is disappointing to see Mumba leave after his troubles in League One, but the agreement benefits everyone concerned.
Argyle will be able to reinvest in their team with the sum received, while Mumba will be able to start a new chapter in a system that will suit him, and Huddersfield will gain a versatile player with plenty of promise that they may hold the key to unlocking.
The 24-year-old will be remembered as a cult hero at Home Park for his services during the title-winning season, but it appears that now is the ideal time for everyone to part ways amicably.
