Sheffield Wednesday takeover situation is ‘terrible’ as pressure intensifies after James Bord breakthrough.

As the wait for ‘clarity’ at Hillsborough continues, Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts has called out Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators.

The Owls were placed into administration on October 24, with the EFL automatically deducting 12 points from the club, followed by another six points at the start of December for failing to pay players earlier in 2025, as well as other non-payments to staff and HMRC.

Sheffield Wednesday has been stranded at the bottom of the Championship with -7 points, while their closest contender, Oxford United, has 22 points.

While a rapid resolution to the crisis at S6 was never guaranteed, Mr Betts has demanded that the club’s administrators reassure supporters that work is being done to finalize the takeover.

On the football, Sheffield Wednesday’s future is all but certain, with Henrik Pedersen unlikely to keep the club from relegation to League One. However, with a preferred bidder being chosen, the situation off the field has progressed.

However, Clive Betts has spoken out against the process of finding a new owner for the Owls, and when asked how he felt about the club’s situation, he told BBC Radio Sheffield: “It’s intolerable. I sat on the football governance bill in Parliament; it is now an act, and the essence of the legislative change is to put fans at the heart of all the processes and standards that govern football clubs and how they operate.

“One of the features of the legislation, one of the sections, states that when insolvency procedures are underway, the club must take reasonable steps to keep fans informed about the progress of the proceedings. The club has an administrator. In my opinion, the administrator should be keeping fans updated, but they aren’t.

“There was a lot of controversy at first regarding the quantity of offers coming in. It was all very encouraging until we were down to three bidders, but we didn’t know who the chosen bidder was. That isn’t acceptable.”

Mr Betts continued: “I wrote to the administrator before Christmas, asking a lot of questions about who the preferred bidder was, whether it was an individual or a partnership. We had heard the name James Bord discussed; was this him? Was this his company? What funding arrangements are being put in place?

How will the governance work? What plans do they have for future fan engagement? The response I received was, “The administrator is on annual leave; he will get back to you.” And then they added, “We are limited in what we can say due to EFL rules.”

“I then went back to them and asked, ‘What did the EFL truly say to you? Is it in writing or via phone call? Could you tell me, and who said it? Of course, I’m going back to the EFL and telling them what the administrator told me. What are your rules to prevent this? Is it true?

“It’s not acceptable. For heaven’s sake, the EFL, the administrator, and the new regulator should come together and provide some clarity to the fans.”

Sheffield Wednesday fans need a resolution sooner than later.

Sheffield Wednesday has been in administration for more than ten weeks, and with the January transfer window now open, the club risks losing important players.

Pierce Charles is just one of those being pursued, with The Star reporting that Strasbourg have made an offer for the outstanding goalkeeper, while Harry Amass’ loan from Manchester United has been cut short.

With Sheffield Wednesday subject to EFL transfer limitations, bringing in new faces is an extremely difficult undertaking, thus finding a new owner to help start preparations for next season as soon as possible is critical to the Owls’ future success.

Patience is running thin in the stands, and without clarification from those in charge, supporters will remain unhappy, necessitating an immediate conclusion.
