Arsenal planning to sign Blackburn Rovers striker after contract stalemate

Blackburn Rovers could lose 17-year-old striker Igor Tyjon in January, with Premier League leaders Arsenal still keen in signing the potential forward.

The Athletic’s transfer agreement sheet from January 6 confirms that Arsenal is still interested in Tyjon, who has yet to sign his first professional contract.

The Blackburn academy product has piqued the eye of a number of Premier League clubs in recent years, and Mikel Arteta’s side had an offer turned down this summer.

However, with the 17-year-old’s scholarship deal expiring in the summer and him telling Valerien Ismael that he will not sign a professional contract at Ewood Park, a January move represents Blackburn’s final opportunity to receive a fee for his services rather than a compensation package in the summer.

Arsenal could make a January move for Igor Tyjon.

The Athletic reports that Arsenal will have a quiet January transfer window after spending more than £250 million in the summer.

However, this does not mean that the Gunners will be utterly quiet in the transfer window this month, with youthful talent aimed at strengthening an already elite academy in North London.

Top of that list appears to be Tyjon, whom the Athletic think Arsenal is still interested in despite their attempts in the summer were turned down by the Championship club.

Blackburn believed the 17-year-old could be a key part of their future, and included him in their first-team plans during pre-season this summer, but Tyjon has yet to play in the second tier this season.

As a result, Tyjon informed Rovers that he has no plans to sign a professional deal with the club, implying that he will leave either at the end of the season, when his two-year scholarship expires, or this month, if Arsenal come calling again.

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Blackburn’s greatest hope of securing “a reflective fee” is to sell this month. If not, they will just receive compensation based on his age when he eventually agrees to terms elsewhere in the summer.

Igor Tyjon appears to have played his last appearance for Blackburn Rovers.

Given Tyjon’s apparent skill, there will be some internal dissatisfaction that the 17-year-old has turned down a professional contract and appears to be leaving for a fraction of what he could be worth in a few years.

Rovers are now experiencing a minor availability dilemma up front, with Andri Gudjohnsen out and Makhtar Gueye underperforming.

Despite this, Valerien Ismael started midfielder Moussa Baradji up forward alongside Yuki Ohashi in their recent game against Charlton Athletic, leaving Tjyon on the bench.

Baradji did repay the manager’s faith with a brace, but the fact that a midfielder was selected ahead of an exciting young prospect suggests that the 17-year-old’s time at Ewood Park is likely over.

With this month representing his final chance to earn a substantial pay for his services, Rovers may press harder for a move, and Arsenal appears to be the side to benefit from it.
