Portsmouth make contact with Premier League club in bid to sign international midfielder

Portsmouth are considering a loan move for Brighton midfielder Andrew Moran during the early stages of the January transfer window.

Pompey have struggled this season, failing to build on their solid 16th-place finish in last season’s Championship, with bad results adding to the pressure on manager John Mousinho.

Even after finishing 2025 with a last-gasp win over Charlton Athletic at Fratton Park on Monday, the need to enhance his team has never been greater, and one target has already been identified.

Portsmouth submits Andrew Moran enquiry as loan deal desired.

According to BBC analyst Chris Wise, Portsmouth have made contact with rival south coast club Brighton & Hove Albion about acquiring midfielder Andrew Moran on a temporary basis for the rest of season.

The 22-year-old has only appeared once in the Premier League for the Seagulls, but he has plenty of Championship experience from loan spells away from the AMEX Stadium, having spent seasons with Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City as a teenager.

Across those two spells, the Republic of Ireland international – who has three senior caps – made 70 English second-tier appearances and scored six goals, but he found himself in unfamiliar territory for the first half of the 2025-26 season, joining MLS club Los Angeles FC for the final few months of their season.

Moran played 10 games for LAFC before being knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Western Conference play-offs, but he has now returned to England for his next transfer, with chances of playing under Fabian Hurzeler exceedingly slim.

It remains to be seen whether Pompey’s enquiry will be successful, but Mousinho appears eager to bolster his midfield options with more inventiveness in the second half of 2025-26.

Andrew Moran might bring a lot of versatility to John Mousinho’s Portsmouth options.

Portsmouth are presently 21st in the Championship and only three points above the relegation zone, thus changes must be made to move them up the table, since some of the summer arrivals are not working well at Fratton Park.

A player of Moran’s caliber, however, might be extremely beneficial on several fronts; not only is he proven at the Championship level, but he also covers a wide range of positions on the pitch.

Moran, a natural offensive midfielder, can play as a ‘eight’ or even deeper in a double pivot if necessary, and he has also played out wide for several clubs in his developing years.

Portsmouth, who are the second-lowest Championship scorers this season, have needed to add some fresh inventiveness to their arsenal, and if they can finalize a deal for Moran, the month will get off to a promising start.
