Coventry City match response via CoventryLive: Frank Lampard left surprised by Swansea fans’ reaction to their former captain.
Frank Lampard slammed Swansea fans for booing their long-serving former captain Matt Grimes in his first game against his old club since joining Coventry City in January.
The defensive midfielder was Lampard’s first permanent signing at the CBS Arena and has proven to be his best thus far. Grimes, in addition to being extremely consistent and strong, having never missed a game due to injury, has proven to be an important part of the Sky Blues’ game.
“I think you almost take him for granted for being outstanding,” said the City manager, referring about his man-of-the-match performance in the 1-0 victory over the Swans, “because he plays at such a higher regular level that I don’t think is touched in this league.”
“I don’t think there are enough people to keep producing games at this level, given the skill, passion, captaincy, and aura of him.
“It’s simple to comment about someone else on the team since he always does the same thing. And, of course, he has an added incentive in the game today since it is his old club, to whom he has given amazing service for ten years, and they continue to boo him, which is incredible.
“I don’t get that one because he’s great, and everybody who knows Grimesy knows the type of guy he is. I believe you just accept that he had those ten years.
“But by the by on that, I think Grimesy handled the game brilliantly and was always fundamental to what we’re trying to do.”
