‘EFL contact Luton Town’ after footage of incident against Reading: ‘Police could be involved’

The EFL is expected to approach Luton Town regarding a possible police probe into an incident during their 3-2 defeat at Reading on Thursday.

Keith Hackett, former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, has exclusively told Football Insider that the Hatters will most likely be requested to present their views to the Football League.

Jack Wilshere has quietly begun to turn Luton’s season around, but their defeat in Berkshire was a disheartening setback in their quest for an instant return to the Championship.

Reading’s Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan scored in the 78th minute to secure the points, but it’s what happened after the final whistle that has dominated post-game talk.

EFL and police will investigate a full-time incident involving Luton fans.

Sky Sports cameras captured an altercation in the Luton end after the final whistle, as tempers flared following the Hatters’ away defeat.

Teden Mengi and Cohen Bramall both approached the travelling supporters, and Sky Sports footage released on X showed an altercation between two fans at the front of the stand.

One supporter was arguing with Bramall when he was hit in the back by another fan who appeared to be upset with the message he was attempting to convey to the player.

The film has since gone viral on social media, and Hackett believes it will prompt action from both the EFL and, potentially, the police.

“Sadly, another incident that creates the wrong image of our great game,” the former official told Football Insider.

“The first step will be to determine if there is any police involvement and if they should take any action. This would halt any action by the Football Authorities until the police had completed their investigation.

“The league is likely to request the club’s observations on this occurrence. It’s unfortunate that a conversation with players appears to have been the trigger for the issue.”

Reading’s defeat has put Jack Wilshere’s Luton side in jeopardy. Despite Wilshere’s early promise at the club, this loss is a significant setback.

His squad is hovering just outside the play-off places in League One, but their latest defeat has created an opening for several teams below them to potentially grasp the opportunity.

Luton are now only four points ahead of Reading, who are 14th, and four teams may theoretically overtake the Hatters with a win this weekend.

When you consider that practically every team in Luton’s close vicinity now has multiple games in hand, the play-off situation may quickly change for Wilshere and Co.
