Exciting Ipswich Town development plans announced for Portman Road.

Ipswich Town’s chief financial officer, Tom Ball, has revealed that the club intends to expand Portman Road to a capacity of approximately 40,000.

The Suffolk club’s home stadium now seats a maximum of 29,673 fans, although that figure might rise by almost 10,000 in the future years.

The Tractor Boys have had a successful few years since Kieran McKenna took over as manager, even spending a season in the Premier League, and they are looking to entrench themselves in the top tier for the long term.

As part of their growth strategy, an expansion to Portman Road may be on the horizon in the near future.

It was reported late last year that the Championship club had struck an agreement in principle with Ipswich Borough Council to purchase property behind the stadium as part of their intentions to expand beyond its 29,000 capacity.

Ipswich Town’s 40,000-seater plans for Portman Road have been disclosed.

Ball has highlighted Ipswich’s aim to extend Portman Road to approximately 40,000 seats, implying that they are considering expanding at the Cobbold Stand and possibly the West Stand.

The CFO said that architects had looked at alternative proposals, which may include filling in the ground’s corners, but that concerns about displacing season ticket holders for 18 months to two years have hampered the process thus far.

“How big do we want or how big do we see as practical?” said Ball via TWTD.

“Our goal is forty thousand.

“It’s something we’re looking into right now: how do we enlarge and replace the Cobbold Stand?

“Is there anything we need to do to expand the West Stand and add another tier behind it?

“We’ve had architects look at it on and off over the past few years.

“Filling in the corners has been recommended, and we’ve had a number of individuals look into various options.

“We were speaking with another group earlier today.

“The fact that the club’s done this for the past few years, it’s not that we’ve lost focus on it, we’ve been working on this in the background all the way along, but it’s really tricky to find a way to develop without displacing season ticket holders and members for a period of 18-24 months.”

Ipswich are hoping for promotion back to the Premier League this season, with the club in contention for a top-two finish.

McKenna’s team are among the clubs vying for a play-off spot as the season nears its halfway point, having lost ground to Coventry City and Middlesbrough.

The Suffolk side will be looking for a successful second half of the season as they aim to return to the Premier League in 2026 after being relegated last season.

Portman Road expansion plans demonstrate how far Ipswich Town has come.

When McKenna took over Ipswich, the club was in League One and appeared no closer to promotion to the second flight.

The rise they’ve had under the Northern Irishman has been phenomenal, and plans to expand Portman Road to 40,000 demonstrate how far they’ve come.

These are excellent ambitions for supporters, even if temporarily displacing season ticket holders could create a short-term logistical problem for the club.

If Ipswich can carry out these intentions, it would be a significant step forward for the Championship side.
