Barrow sacks former Oxford United player Andy Whing.

Andy Whing, the former Oxford United captain, was fired as Barrow’s manager last week, leaving the players dissatisfied.

Whing and his assistant Craig Pead, who previously worked with the former U’s right back at Banbury United, were both relieved of their duties after six games without a victory.

They left the Bluebirds four points above the relegation zone, with a 3-0 loss to Tranmere Rovers being the final straw.

The former Banbury manager has been in Cumbria since January, having joined from Solihull Moors, and led Barrow to a 16th-place finish after a good conclusion to last season.

Bluebirds goalkeeper Wyll Stanway told the BBC: “It’s a huge shame, and I’m heartbroken for them that it didn’t work out.

“They were great lads for us, very committed to the football and the town and local community, which was something they really bought into.”

Paul Hornby, the chairman of Barrow, explained: “After careful consideration, we feel that our current league position does not reflect the quality and the investment that has been put into the squad that we have assembled.”

Whing remarked on X following his dismissal, saying, “It’s incredibly heartbreaking, especially telling my boys.

“We as a family were fully invested, and I believe it is quite cruel, but we will go again.

“The messages have been so supportive and I can’t wait to prove people wrong again.”
