Chris Wilder has underlined Sheffield United’s areas for improvement in the upcoming January transfer window, and he feels the COH Sports ownership group will be “very supportive” in ensuring a successful month of transactions.
According to the Sheffield Star, boosting right-back and midfield options amid an availability and injury crisis, as well as adding quality to help push further up the table, are what is required at Bramall Lane next month.
The winter window will be crucial for the Blades, as the returning Wilder wants to bring in more players who fit his style, following a summer in which numerous players were brought in with no clear direction under Ruben Selles.
Sheffield United’s form has improved in recent weeks. They’re now just eight points behind the top six and might be even closer when the window opens. As a result, the Blades manager believes that his team remains an appealing football club to play for.
Chris Wilder reveals transfer priorities ahead of the January window.

According to the Sheffield Star, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has revealed that the club is already looking for “three or four” names to help enhance the team in January, with the primary focus being on improving the current crop rather than adding bodies for the purpose of squad depth.
Key positions include right-back, where Femi Seriki has been playing on his own this season, and midfield, which has been light since Vini Souza’s departure in the summer due to different injuries.
“We’ve talked through it,” Wilder stated while discussing the transfer strategy with the COH Sport board. “They have been quite supportive, and I am grateful for that.
“However, the midfield availability dilemma exposed and highlighted the recommendations we made in January. It’s what’s best for the football club, since the club always comes first, not me.”
Because of Tom Davies’ and Sydie Peck’s ailments and illnesses, the Blades were obliged to start Ollie Arblaster on Tuesday for his first Championship minutes since November 2024, and the same may be required on Friday against West Brom.
However, the additions will not be done solely to beef up the team. Wilder believed that the team had become bloated under Selles and that the new players would play a role in the second half of the season.
“It is not about bringing in five, six, or seven players. “Just a turnover of players that I believe will help us in January, and hopefully a continuation of what we’re doing now to make us stronger and better going into the new year,” Wilder concluded.
“I anticipate the board will be quite supportive in January. I am not placing any pressure on anyone. If it’s the same, then it is, and a decision has been made.
“Some of the boys who came in on loan will return to their parent clubs. I believe everyone understands that. So, in my opinion, we need to replace them with lads who are eager to get into the side and start. That, I believe, is critical since the lending market has proven to be beneficial to us over time.
“And I’ve continuously stated that this is still a very, very appealing football club to come and play for, even if we’re in the position that we are. But I believe that the players who will come will help us improve and move forward.”
Sheffield United fans will be happy with the January transfer strategy.

A six-game unbeaten streak has propelled the Blades out of the bottom three, and some Sheffield United fans are now focusing on the top six once more.
It took Chris Wilder a few months to sort out his side after a chaotic summer transfer window, but the popular manager now appears to understand his best squad when everyone is fit and will know how to enhance it.
Ben Godfrey and Louie Barry have almost definitely played their last games for the club. Tyler Bindon would have been on that list as well, but injuries have brought him back into contention, and Chris Wilder may like what he sees enough to keep him in the lineup in the new year.
And it appears that those Wilder has in mind to come in and replace the players who haven’t seen action under him since his return for a third term in the Bramall Lane dugout will be pushed straight into the mix to start and improve the side.
Sheffield United will seek to narrow the gap on the top six by putting together an exceptional run between now and the window opening.
Then, the newcomers will be well-suited to hit the ground running and provide the necessary boost to push for promotion.
