A statement was issued after Charlton Athletic’s Championship match against Portsmouth was called off on Saturday afternoon due to a medical emergency in the crowd. Both teams were hoping to return to winning ways, but the game was called off after 12 minutes when a medical crew came to the help of a Charlton fan in the Covered End.
Referee Matthew Donohue then directed the players to leave the pitch in the 19th minute owing to the upsetting occurrences. Paramedics took the supporter away on a stretcher after 10 minutes of treatment. The Addicks have not won a Championship game since their close triumph over West Bromwich Albion last month. They have since lost to Wrexham, Southampton, Stoke City, and league leaders Coventry City.
Charlton were promoted to the second division at the end of previous season after qualifying through the League One play-offs. Pompey, meanwhile, has been trying to maintain their standing since returning to English football’s second flight in 2024. Both clubs will have to wait for a replay because the players did not return to finish the contest.
