a former West Brom superstar and history-maker has sadly been confirmed dead today.

Remi Moses spent eight years of his career with Manchester United, following his professional debut with West Brom.
Remi Moses, Manchester United’s first-ever black goal scorer, died at the age of 65.

The midfielder was born in Manchester in November 1960 and began his professional career at West Brom. He made 65 appearances for the Baggies, scoring five goals and assisting twice, before joining the Red Devils for £500,000 in 1981.

Moses went on to make 199 appearances for United, becoming a beloved character at Old Trafford. Injuries cut short his career, forcing him to retire after only 17 games in the 1988-89 season.

In October 1981, he scored his first goal for United, making history. It was notable since it made him the club’s first black goalscorer. In October 2024, the United club website noted in a piece regarding Moses’ achievement: “While Dennis Walker may be United’s first black player, Moses was our second and became our first black scorer, and he certainly warrants greater attention when it comes to his contribution for the club.”

Moses scored 12 goals in total for United, the first coming in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough.

Just over a year ago, the United website described him as follows: “The midfielder is best remembered for his toughness and ability to mix it in the middle of the park.” He was suspended for the 1983 FA Cup final after receiving a red card for a confrontation with fellow hardman, Arsenal’s Peter Nicholas.

“An underrated passer, it was suspected he could have been more expansive had he not played regularly alongside huge personalities in Bryan Robson, who was also a team-mate at West Brom, and Ray Wilkins.

“When called upon to step up in Robson’s absence, such as during the 1984 European Cup-Winners’ Cup semi-finals with Juventus, he excelled and thrived on the big occasion.”

Following his retirement, he worked in property in Manchester and has recently settled in Greece.
