Sports pundit Aaron McLean delivers his verdict on the Regan Poole challenge on Scott Twine during the Portsmouth vs Bristol City clash

Pompey faced Bristol City today at Fratton Park, and referee Sam Allison made a vital call just 45 seconds into the Championship match, which Sky Sports analyst Aaron McLean believes was correct.

Scott Twine fell to the ground following what appeared to be contact from Pompey defender Regan Poole. With the Fratton Park audience holding its breath, Allison took a moment to analyze the situation before waving play on, determining that no foul had occurred – a decision that offered solace to the home fans.

Twine, on the other hand, was plainly frustrated, thumping the turf with disappointment.

McLean concurred with the referee’s judgment, stating “It’s a huge call so early on.” Without VAR, we can’t review it, but I believe the referee made the correct choice.”

With Pompey on the verge of dropping into the bottom three dependent on other results, the early break was good — albeit it didn’t stop them from falling behind. Bristol City took the lead in the 17th minute through Anis Mehmeti’s header.

McLean stated that he expected the referee to call a penalty, but after reviewing the replays, he now believes he was correct. “Twine just stumbles.”
