EFL club announce surprise signing of former Champions League star

Charlton Athletic has confirmed the surprise signing of free agency defender Jerome Roussillon.

Due to injury concerns in their team, the Addicks have signed the Champions League-experienced left-back.

Roussillon has been without a club since leaving Bundesliga team Union Berlin at the end of the previous season.

The Guadeloupe international, who will wear the No.15 shirt, stated, “I’m very thrilled to be here and a member of the team.

“I’m excited to get started and can’t wait to play in front of our supporters.”

Charlton have signed a very experienced defender who has played nearly 350 games in his career.

The 32-year-old has previously played for Wolfsburg, Montpellier, and FC Sochaux, totaling 20 European games.

Ten of those appearances have been in the Champions League, while the remaining ten have come in the Europa League.

Roussillon joins Charlton because Nathan Jones wants more options at left-back, with Josh Edwards still out injured.

Jones stated, “We’re delighted to be able to bring in someone with Jérôme’s experience.”

“We’ve obviously been short in that area due to Josh Edwards’ injury, and it’s the only position where we don’t have much coverage.

“So we’re pleased to bring Jérôme in to give us more competition and quality in that area.”

Roussillon’s Career Path

Roussillon began his career in France, where he played for the French national team as a youth for more than a decade.

He began his professional career with Sochaux, then moved on to Montpellier in 2015 and Wolfsburg in 2018.

That transfer to Germany paid off, as he went on to make his European football debut.

He appeared 16 times in the Champions League and Europa League for Wolfsburg and seven times for Union Berlin after joining the fellow Bundesliga club in January 2023.

Roussillon changed his international allegiances while in Berlin, and he now represents Guadeloupe, where he has 17 caps.

His last club appearance was in April, as a substitute against Bayer Leverkusen, and Charlton was his surprise next team.

When might Roussillon make his debut?

Roussillon is eligible to make his Charlton debut this Saturday.

He has been registered in time to play in the Addicks’ difficult journey to face Championship league leaders Coventry City, which will be broadcast live on talkSPORT 2 from 3pm.

Jones’ team will face one of the most difficult matches of the season when they face Frank Lampard’s rampaging side.

Coventry City lead the second division by ten points and appear to be favourites for promotion to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Charlton has plummeted to 16th place after losing three consecutive games following a solid start.
