Sheffield Wednesday have signed former Leeds United defender Liam Cooper on a contract that runs until the conclusion of the current season.

The 34-year-old centre-back, who has made over 400 senior games in his career, joins Hillsborough as a free agent after spending time with Bulgarian club CSKA Sofia. Cooper spent a decade at Leeds United, becoming one of the club’s most tenured players in the modern period.
Cooper began his professional career at Hull City before moving to Chesterfield, where he played a major role in the club’s 2014 League Two title triumph. His performances won him a move to Elland Road, where he established himself as club captain.
Cooper helped take Leeds back to the Premier League in 2020 under Marcelo Bielsa, where he later played for three seasons. His club form earned him a spot on the Scotland national squad, where he will compete at the European Championships in 2020 and 2024.
Cooper left Leeds in 2024 and moved to Bulgaria to join CSKA Sofia. He now returns to English football with Wednesday, where he hopes to provide significant experience and leadership at the heart of the defence for the remainder of the season.
In other Wednesday news, Sean Fusire played for over an hour in Zimbabwe’s 2-1 friendly win over Qatar on Monday.
