These three Southampton players may have played their last games as the January transfer window draws near.

Southampton has seen a large squad turnover in recent seasons, and with further departures predicted, a few players may have already made their final outings for the club. The Saints are currently 17th in the Championship after 15 games, as the latest international break begins.

Even with back-to-back triumphs against QPR and Sheffield Wednesday, the team’s start has been disappointing with four wins, six draws, and five losses. Despite substantial summer investment under Will Still (who has since been fired), the team continues to fall far short of expectations. A new manager is set to come over in January, and additional squad restructuring appears inevitable. As a result, several players may be on their way out.

Winger, Samuel Edozie

When Samuel Edozie moved from Manchester City in 2022, he was considered a big prospect. He made 17 appearances for Southampton in 2022–2023 and was a key part of their campaign for promotion the following season. But after falling down the ranks, he spent the previous season on loan at Anderlecht, where he established himself as a reliable starter in Belgium and attracted interest from teams like Club Brugge and Strasbourg. He hasn’t played for Southampton since coming back, and as January draws near, it appears more likely that he will sign a loan or make a permanent move.

Ramsdale, Aaron

After three seasons at Arsenal, Aaron Ramsdale joined Southampton in 2024, but the team and he had a terrible Premier League season with just two victories and 12 points. The £25 million goalie had to play in the Championship after being relegated. Eddie Howe moved for Ramsdale after Newcastle United lost out on James Trafford, taking him on loan with a £15 million buyout option.
A permanent move away from Southampton seems more likely than a return, even if Newcastle has not yet chosen whether to activate that clause—Ramsdale has only made three appearances and is still behind Nick Pope.

Díaz, Ben Brereton

Ben Brereton Díaz is the third player who most likely played his final game for the Saints. He only played in the EFL Cup and started on the bench early in the season before leaving Pride Park, where he has since started every game. He is currently on loan at Derby County.
Brereton Díaz played for Southampton in the Premier League during the first half of the 2024–25 season before going on loan to Sheffield United to help them with their promotion campaign. In 18 games, he scored four goals and provided three assists.
Even if he might be helpful given his Championship experience, the arrival of other young attackers at St. Mary’s raises the possibility that he won’t be able to continue playing for the team in the long run. The most likely scenario appears to be a permanent departure next summer.
