Rob Edwards breaks silence on leaving Middlesbrough for Wolves

ROB Edwards has broken his silence on his departure from Middlesbrough, admitting he “wouldn’t have considered leaving” for any club other than Wolves.

Edwards acknowledged his choice to leave the Riverside to take over the Premier League’s lowest team as “one of the toughest” of his career. But the head coach claims it was his “dream” to return to Wolves, where he has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract as head coach. Edwards signed a three-year contract with Boro in the summer, but left less than five months later, after constantly stressing the need for “unity” and “togetherness” on Teesside.

Wolves, who are at the basement of the Premier League and winless after 11 games, will provide compensation. Edwards is joined at Molineux by Harry Watling, whose Boro departure was also announced today. Adi Viveash will remain at the Riverside and lead the first team while the search for a new head coach continues. Middlesbrough’s future head coach is being considered, and a Teessider is taking on the ‘ideal’ role behind the scenes. Wolves have yet to publish an interview with Edwards since his appointment earlier today, but the 42-year-old has taken to social media to try to explain why he left Boro. A message on his account read: “This has been one of the most difficult decisions of my career. In truth, I would not have considered leaving Middlesbrough for another team. “Wolves is an important club to me. It’s where I learned to play and coach, and it’s still where my family lives. It has always been my goal to return, and these opportunities do not come along very often. “Middlesbrough is an amazing club, with a fantastic owner, staff, and devoted fans. I’d want to thank everyone at the club for the opportunity to lead this squad. It’s a fantastic collection of players who I sincerely hope and believe will be successful this season. “I couldn’t be more proud of the environment we created together and how quickly it all came together – the players, the staff, and the fans, who are the driving force. “I sincerely wish everyone at Middlesbrough all the very best for the rest of the season and beyond.” A week on Saturday, Wolves will play their debut game under Edwards at home against Crystal Palace.
