Breaking News: Norwich City in talks with 49-year-old about replacing Liam Manning – Gary O’Neil update also emerges

Norwich City is far along in its search for a new manager after Liam Manning was fired. The Dane has interviewed for the Canaries position and has identified former Blackburn Rovers manager Jon Dahl Tomasson as a possible candidate.

Following Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Leicester City, former MK Dons and Bristol City manager Liam Manning was relieved of his duties at Carrow Road. The Canaries are currently in 23rd position after 15 games, having only picked up nine points during that time.

In what has been an absolutely terrible season so far in Norfolk, Norwich has failed to earn a single point at home. If they don’t start picking up points quickly, they could end up at the bottom of the table.

Manning’s brief tenure as manager of his boyhood club came to an end with the next international break, and Norwich has moved quickly to find replacements. According to John Percy via X, former Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has been interviewed for the position.

The club expects to confirm an appointment within the next ten days before their away game to Birmingham City after the end of the international break, according to Percy, who also reports that former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil has been interviewed for the position.

After Liam Manning was fired, Jon Dahl Tomasson was interviewed for the Norwich City position.

John Percy confirmed via X on Wednesday that Tomasson had formally been interviewed for the position at Carrow Road.

With Sweden likely to miss out on the next FIFA World Cup in 2026 after four games without a victory in their World Cup Qualification group—two losses to Kosovo and one to Switzerland—the Danish head coach has been unemployed since being fired from his position with the Swedish national team.

Although he has helped them move up to second place in the Championship table going into the international break, Rob Edwards, who has only been in charge for 15 games, appears destined to join Wolves in the Premier League. Tomasson was previously linked to the position at Middlesbrough during the summer.

Norwich has acted swiftly to start negotiations with the Dane, who will not be playing for the Canaries for the first time in England.

Jon Dahl Tomasson has played for Blackburn Rovers in the EFL Championship.

The apex of Tomasson’s Rovers career was his first season as Blackburn’s manager, which began in June 2022. Despite almost missing out on a spot in the play-offs to Sunderland on goal differential, he guided the Lancashire-based team to seventh place.

However, his second season would turn out quite differently, as Blackburn finished the Championship in 18th place, just three points above the relegation zone. He was fired in February 2024, and Jon Eustace took his place, keeping them in the Championship.

“We defied budget cuts in my first season with Blackburn and only missed out on the play-offs on goal difference,” he told The Mirror after leaving the team.

“We had the best cup run in even more years, and it was Rovers’ best league result in almost ten years. Although I adored the people in and around Rovers, the finances were drastically reduced prior to my second season, and all of a sudden, the focus shifted away from development and construction.

“I requested permission to depart because it was no longer the project I had signed up to complete. They didn’t want it, but I’m grateful that they finally agreed to it following the January transfer window.”

He won’t be joining a club that is frugal with its finances if he signs with Norwich.

Under the direction of Sporting Director Ben Knapper, who has come under growing scrutiny for his part in the club’s present plight, the Canaries have spent over £50 million on new signings over the last two seasons.

Tomasson’s first task will be to improve the team’s performance and steer them clear of relegation danger. If he succeeds in doing so, he will probably have support in the transfer market, something he criticized Blackburn’s owners for failing to do.

The Dane is a strong candidate for the position after an interview, and he will learn within the next 10 days whether or not he will be relocating to Norfolk.
