After Swansea City fired Alan Sheehan on Tuesday, Sky Sports analyst Lee Hendrie thinks the next Swansea City manager needs a lot of support.
With a 4-1 home loss to Ipswich Town ending Sheehan’s six-month tenure, the Swans are the latest team to be searching for a new manager. Sheehan had been leading the team to its worst start to a season since their previous Premier League relegation.
With just one win from their last seven league games, the Welsh team is currently in 18th place in the Championship and only seven points above the bottom three.
Swansea will also need to move fast to find a replacement, as Southampton and Norwich City are both searching for new managers after firing Liam Manning and Will Still, respectively.
Naturally, choosing the best candidate for the position at this point in the season is challenging because there aren’t many options left after the season starts, but the club is hoping that their actions will help them look up the table rather than over their shoulders in the upcoming weeks and months.
In light of this information, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has discussed with FLW who he believes should be on the shortlist for Swansea City manager.
Lee Hendrie supports The Swansea City manager shortlist will include Russell Martin, Brendan Rodgers, Gary O’Neil, Steven Gerrard, and Michael Carrick.

According to Sky Sports analyst Lee Hendrie, who spoke exclusively to Football League World, Swansea City will be considering all of Michael Carrick, Steven Gerrard, Gary O’Neil, Brendan Rodgers, and Russell Martin to succeed Alan Sheehan. However, he maintains that the team must demonstrate ambition and financial support if they wish to proceed.
“Yeah, I was a little surprised really,” Hendrie replied. Given the findings, it is clear that they lacked that consistency, which is why this was done. They’ve started out very early; I wouldn’t say they’re playing at their best, but it hasn’t been the worst, so you wouldn’t expect a dismissal.
Swansea did play a beautiful style under him (Sheehan), but I feel like they’ve been stagnating for a while and lack the money to bring in big players to advance.
“I believe that the typical suspects will support this, such as the former open positions, like Michael Carrick and Steven Gerrard, and if you’re looking further down the field, you’re looking at a Russell Martin, who might fit that blend. They could also take a different approach and get someone who is looking for work but isn’t on the shortlist.
“Obviously, it’s a team that wants to be doing a lot better than where they are in the league, so in my opinion, it won’t be on that list unless they completely cut ties with the few managers who are currently available, which would be people like Carrick, Gerrard, Brendan Rodgers, and Gary O’Neil. You’d think they’d try to prize them to the football club, but they need backing.”

Swansea City is currently in a perilous position, so the hierarchy must choose a man who can turn things around and keep them out of danger of relegation.
Given their degrees of Championship management experience and their history of leading teams to contend for promotion spots, you would have to conclude that Michael Carrick and Russell Martin would be the strongest two prospects to pursue out of those Lee Hendrie listed.
Approaching Brendan Rodgers or Gary O’Neil might not be the Swansea board’s first priority right now because it’s always a risk to take on a manager who isn’t prepared for the rigors of the second division.
However, according to Wales Online, Hammerby manager Kim Hellberg is apparently a contender and had “informal talks” with the club, raising the potential of a move for a foreign manager.
This indicates that there is still a lot of room for applicants to claim the position, but Swansea will still need to act fast because they need to be as ready as possible for their November 22 return to Championship action against Bristol City.
