Middlesbrough’s focus has already shifted to the future as Rob Edwards departs for Wolves.
Boro is currently second in the Championship, despite the fact that they have not yet established a cohesive attacking force. This presents a solid opportunity for an individual to assume leadership and potentially become a legend on Teesside. However, who could that individual be?
It is difficult to predict the outcome of the competition to become the next manager of Boro. Boro chiefs have yet to identify their primary targets, despite the fact that names are still being tossed around as agents become active at this juncture. Rather, the initial phase of their process involves evaluating each and every legitimate candidate before reducing the number to a manageable shortlist for interviews.

If Gary O’Neil had not admitted to intentionally earning a suspension to remain home and watch golf while a Boro player, it is possible that he would have been. Gareth Southgate, another Teesside favorite, is included in the bookies’ lists but has not expressed a strong interest in returning to management since departing England.
Steven Gerrard’s name remains associated. He was promptly disqualified during the summer, but he has recently indicated that he is nearing the point at which he will be able to resume his role in management. Although his recent roles have resulted in a decline in his stock, his accomplishments with the Rangers should not be overlooked. Perhaps Frank Lampard’s success at Coventry City serves as a reminder that a career should not be terminated by one or two poor performances. Gerrard appears to be an appointment that is particularly indicative of the Boro brand.
At this time, it is impossible to exclude the possibility of an entirely unexpected event. A number of managers have been granted their first-ever opportunities by Gibson. Bryan Robson, Steve McClaren, Gareth Southgate, Aitor Karanka, and Michael Carrick were each offered their initial experience in management at Boro.
Is it possible for Gibson to revisit that path? EFL clubs are increasingly exploring prominent assistant coaches and highly-regarded junior coaches as viable options.
Ultimately, this one is currently difficult to predict and appears to be wide open.
