Mike Dean Gives Verdict on Controversial Decision to Disallow Fulham Goal vs Chelsea

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has commented on Fulham’s disallowed goal in their 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon. Marco Silva’s Cottagers were unable to respond to goals from Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez at Stamford Bridge, but were irritated when 18-year-old Josh King was denied his first professional goal, giving the visitors the lead inside the first 25 minutes.

The strike was ruled out because goalscorer Rodrigo Muniz was penalized for standing on Trevor Chalobah while turning away from the defense on the halfway line. Dean immediately offered his opinion on the contentious call.

Dean reacts to the VAR controversy.

Despite his usual pro-VAR stance on crucial judgments, Dean couldn’t help but concede the decision was incorrect and the goal should have stood.

Dean regarded the contact as an accident and stated that the VAR should have remained out of the game because he sympathized with a furious Marco Silva on the sidelines.

“The VAR should just keep out of it; there is no clear and evident fault, but he had the will to stick with the on-field decision; he panicked, and it is not a foul at all. “I don’t know anyone who would call that a foul,” Dean initially stated before expanding on his remarks at halftime.

“This is really a bad call. VAR should just keep out of it; it’s a pure accident. When the referee looks at the screen, he has to ask himself, “If I were the VAR, would I send the referee?” I don’t believe he would. He needs to have some circular objects and follow your on-field decision.

Marco Silva was also enraged by the amount of extra time in the first half, which resulted in Joao Pedro opening the scoring nine minutes after the 45th minute. The injustice appeared to knock the stuffing out of the visitors, who have now gone three games without a win to open the Premier League season.
