An ’emergency summit’ between the club and UEFA is scheduled for Tuesday, according to reports.
According to reports, Crystal Palace, a Premier League team, will discuss their spot in European football next season with UEFA in light of a possible violation of multi-club ownership regulations.
Last month, Palace defeated Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup, their first major title.
Due to their qualification for the Europa League, they will be playing in Europe for the first time.
Due to a ’emergency summit’ with UEFA on Tuesday, Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail writes that their place in that competition is not yet completely assured.
The matter is to the ownership of Palace and Lyon by majority shareholder John Textor, as well as the circumstances surrounding Danish team Brondby.
Through the Eagle Holdings Group, the American businessman owns the majority of Lyon in addition to around 45% of Palace.
Since two clubs owned by the same entity are prohibited from participating in the same European competition by UEFA regulations, Lyon, who recently revealed staggering debts of over €500 million, qualified for the Europa League by finishing sixth in Ligue 1.
According to those rules, the team that finished in the higher league place would receive the qualification spot in the event of a conflict.
According to The Mail, Palace has formally declined to comment, but it is believed that they are “confident” of their participation in the Europa League because Textor “does not make decisions in his own right” and only has 25% of the club’s voting rights.
However, if the worst happens, it might be difficult to compete in the Conference League because Brondby, who qualified for the league by placing third in the Danish Superliga, is primarily owned by Palace co-owner David Blitzer, who owns only about 10% of the shares at Selhurst Park.
A situation where Brighton takes the Conference League position through their eighth-place Premier League result, and Nottingham Forest is ‘promoted’ from the Conference League to the Europa League, could subsequently occur.
