Why Son Heung-min Wasn’t Wearing Medal During Tottenham’s Europa League Celebrations

After leading Tottenham to their first title in 17 years, Son Heung-min called himself “the happiest man in the world.” Spurs defeated Manchester United 1-0 on Wednesday night to win the Europa League.

The 32-year-old’s first trophy of the season is the Europa League. He was once mentioned as one of the greatest football players who had never taken home a major award. According to BBC Sport, the South Korean remarked, “Let’s say I’m a legend,” in his post-match interview with TNT Sports. “Why not? Since no one has accomplished it in 17 years, let’s assume that I am a legend of the team with outstanding players.

“I’ve had this fantasy my entire life. The day it occurred was today. I am the world’s happiest man. Throughout the entire season, there will inevitably be difficult times, but as players, we have always stood behind one another.”

“I felt the pressure,” he continued. I really wanted it. I have been having nightly dreams about this game for the last seven days. I may now rest easy because it finally occurred! We should make tonight a memorable celebration, and perhaps I won’t catch the flight tomorrow.”

Why Son Wasn’t Wearing Europa League Medal

Spurs captain didn’t get a medal for trophy lift

Son and his ecstatic teammates proudly raised the coveted European trophy, but astute supporters saw that the Spurs captain was missing his Europa League winners’ medal. Fans questioned why the forward wasn’t wearing a medal as he carried on with the post-match festivities without one around his neck.

Son’s colleagues are seen receiving winners’ medals from UEFA President Alexander Ceferin in the video before he appears to run out of time. According to the Associated Press, UEFA has since acknowledged that the issue arose because Tottenham sent too many personnel to the medal celebration.

According to the European governing body of football, clubs were told that each team would only get 30 medals on stage. After the ceremony, the victorious club would get an additional 20 medals to distribute to players and staff.

Son lost out on a medal because he was among the last players in queue. The South Korean eventually obtained a medal later in the evening, even though he was still without one when he spoke with TNT Sports after the game.

Son, one of Tottenham’s finest players ever, was quite happy of his first-ever winners’ medal, and it’s hard to blame him.
