Why Getafe Fans Hate Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos as Match Halted Due to Chants

Real Madrid defeated Getafe on Wednesday night, maintaining their chances of winning La Liga again. Los Blancos entered the game seven points behind their closest rivals in the fight for the title after Barcelona’s victory against Mallorca on Tuesday. Real Madrid understood that only a victory would be sufficient to overtake Barcelona at the top of the table as the games were quickly coming to an end.

After 21 minutes, they took the lead thanks to a goal from Arda Guler, one of the most gifted young football players in the world. Real Madrid earned the three points they sorely needed, and no more goals were scored.

However, there was some controversy surrounding the match at Coliseum Stadium. In the second half, the game was momentarily stopped because of jeering from the crowd at Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos.

Temporary Game Stoppage During Real Madrid vs. Getafe
The Getafe supporters yelled at Ceballos.

Getafe’s supporters chanted “die, Ceballos” as soon as Ceballos was brought onto the game in the 78th minute, expressing their distaste for him. Sánchez Martínez, the game’s referee, was informed of the chanting by Real Madrid’s disgruntled players.

In order to take action, the referee stopped the game and approached both managers. The chanting stopped after a suspension warning and a message were broadcast over the PA system. According to AS, the game’s match report said:

At the request of the Real Madrid players, the game was halted in the 78th minute to enforce the verbal abuse protocol because of chanting originating from a section of the stadium’s south end home stands. “Ceballos die, Ceballos die” was one of the chants that could be heard. When the PA system announced that the chants should stop, which they did, the game was halted for a minute.

Striker Borja Mayoral of Getafe denounced the chanting. “I think they are not nice for any player,” Borja stated following the game, according to MadridUniversal. Football and sports must be free of that. I hope that doesn’t occur once again.

Why Dani Ceballos Is Hatred by Getafe Supporters
They still remember what Ceballos did against them in a prior game.

Ceballos has been hated by Getafe supporters for almost ten years. It all started with a Real Betis vs. Getafe game on May 15, 2016. On the last day of the La Liga season, neither team had anything to lose because Getafe’s relegation had already been confirmed and Betis had guaranteed their spot in the Spanish top division for another season.

Ceballos, who was only a teenager at the time, got into a fight with a member of the coaching staff and Cala, a defender for Getafe, while he was playing for Betis that day. Ceballos said something to Cala that really irritated him. Later, it came to light that Ceballos said to him:

“I hope you rot in the Second Division and disappear.”

Getafe supporters are yet to forgive the Real Madrid midfielder over ten years later.
