Before Marcus Rashford equalised for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa from the penalty spot, commentator Gary Neville noticed something that went against the grain, with both Manchester City and Aston Villa vying for a position in the Champions League next season.
Bernardo Silva opened the score early in the match when he palmed the Portuguese’s effort into his net due to a minor mistake involving Emiliano Martinez. He then wheeled off in joy. Manchester City had the advantage, but their one-goal lead was short-lived.
Ruben Dias tripped the Englishman inside the box with Jacob Ramsey aiming for the goal, but referee Craig Pawson was unaware of how serious the contact was. Following a pitch-side check, VAR stepped in and the man in black appropriately pointed to the spot.
The replay of the event was displayed at the stadium to the dismay of Dias, Pep Guardiola, and the home crowd. Neville, who played 600 games for Manchester United during his playing career, was shocked by their choice to show the incident on a large screen.

Neville, one of the best right-backs in Premier League history, praised Ramsey’s fast thinking before Dias touched his leg, saying, “He leaves his right leg in, it’s clever.” “Are they permitted to display a replay on the large screen?”
At halftime, Kelly Cates of Sky Sports revealed that a replay was aired because Pawson and the people at Stockley Park had agreed that it ought to have been reversed. “It was displayed in the stadium, as they do when a VAR ruling is overturned,” she claimed.
Shortly after the VAR incident, when the visitors were given a lifeline, the Premier League took to X (previously Twitter) to explain why Rashford scored from 12 yards out to put the four-time champions back on track after Silva struck an opener after seven minutes.
“After reviewing the referee’s decision to award Aston Villa no penalty for Dias’ challenge on Ramsey, VAR concluded that there had been a clear trip and suggested an on-field review. The referee reversed the initial ruling and gave Aston Villa a penalty.
Even though supporters of Etihad Stadium were not delighted with the decision, particularly when it was shown on the big screen for everyone to see, it was made, and Rashford’s goal tied the score. Dias and Guardiola received bookings for their responses.
The two sides are competing to earn top four credentials between now and the end of the 2024–2025 campaign, as said. Guardiola’s team will next play Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers. It’s Bournemouth and Fulham for Villa.
