Why Burnley and Leeds’ Promotion is Good News For All Other Premier League Clubs

Due to an intriguing rule, Leeds United and Burnley are guaranteed their return to the Premier League after both teams were promoted this week. It appears that many top tier teams will be pleased to see them return. The former were demoted in 2023, and after losing the opportunity to return immediately to the promised land the previous season, they have made amends this time and have battled their way back to the Premier League under Daniel Farke.

Despite losing manager Vincent Kompany to Bayern Munich, the latter were barely demoted last season. Under Scott Parker’s leadership, they have since risen quickly, and their victory over Sheffield United on Monday guaranteed both teams promotion. Their scheduled parachute payments have been cancelled because both teams returned to the Premier League so soon after exiting the competition. A recent analysis reveals why every team in the top flight will be extremely thrilled as a result.

Their Parachute Payments Will Go to the Rest of the Premier League

They will be distributed among every team

It is anticipated that a team’s finances will suffer greatly when they are demoted from the Premier League. Consequently, individuals who are dropped into the Championship receive parachute payments from the top division. For the first three seasons that they are in the second division, they get a stipend of money each season to assist them get used to life away from the Premier League.

Leeds and Burnley will no longer get their parachute payments because they both returned to the top division before their three-year period ended. According to a Mirror article, the remaining funds that were initially intended to be split between the two teams would now be split among the other Premier League teams.

Although the precise amount that both clubs were expected to receive in parachute payments is unknown, it was disclosed in 2021 that the teams receiving parachute payments were receiving approximately £30 million each. As a result, the Premier League clubs will all be able to make a respectable sum of money as Leeds and Burnley return to the top flight. It’s unlikely that any of them will be unhappy with this.

There is still a lot of competition to join the two teams in the top level. After losing to Burnley on Monday, Sheffield United will no longer be eligible for automatic promotion and will instead have to contend for the final Premier League position in the playoffs. The only two teams that have guaranteed a spot in the playoffs thus far are Sunderland and the Blades.

Mathematically, teams like Bristol City, Coventry City, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Blackburn Rovers, West Bromwich Albion, and Swansea City are still in the running for the remaining two spots, and the outcome will be determined in the campaign’s final two games.
