Tottenham: Ange Postecoglou explains Cristian Romero absence from Newcastle friendly

Surprisingly, the two missed their flight to Australia.

The reason behind Cristian Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s absence from Tottenham’s post-season friendly against Newcastle in Melbourne has been revealed by manager Ange Postecoglou.

The only two senior players who did not travel with the team were the defender and the midfielder. It has since been confirmed that Romero has returned to Argentina, and Hojbjerg was not risked due to a fitness concern.

According to Postecoglou, “Cuti [Romero] is more for personal reasons,” he told reporters. He needs to take a plane back to Argentina.

“Pierre was kind of touch and go before the most recent game due to an injury, and he pulled up sore afterward.

“Once more, it didn’t make sense to bring guys like that along on a flight that is that long because we were leaving right away.”

“Everyone else got through unscathed [against Sheffield United], so we’ll have a full compliment from the squad we took away and some young players as well who will get some game time.”

Romero will be an important member of Argentina’s team during the upcoming Copa America, which begins in the US on June 20.

Newcastle and Tottenham will play tomorrow in Melbourne at 10.45 a.m. UK time.
