Before saying his final goodbyes to Anfield on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp has listed some of his favorite moments as manager of Liverpool. With a Premier League match against Wolves, Klopp’s nine-year tenure will come to an end, and Arne Slot will take on the challenging position of successor.
This morning, the Liverpool manager gave his final press conference before a game, nearly ten years after his notorious “normal one” press conference on Merseyside.
He was also filled with nostalgia, reminiscing about some of his favorite moments from his victorious reign, which produced enough memories to last a lifetime for Reds fans.
As his most memorable moment as manager, Klopp cited Liverpool’s incredible comeback victory against Barcelona en route to winning a sixth Champions League in 2019.
After a disastrous first leg at the Nou Camp, the German team trailed 3-0. However, on a magical night at Anfield, braces from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum earned a reality-defying 4-0 victory.
Under Klopp’s direction, Liverpool lost two Champions League finals to Real Madrid but defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 after shocking Barcelona to regain control of Europe.
He named Trent Alexander-Arnold’s fast corner kick, which set up Origi’s game-winning goal in the second leg versus Barcelona, his best assist.
Liverpool knew that a goal from the Serie A team would eliminate them from the competition early on, so they held onto a precarious 1-0 lead against Napoli at home earlier in the competition.
When Arkadiusz Milik had a clear opportunity to score from a distance in the 92nd minute, the hosts appeared to be in danger. But, Alisson made an incredible save to save them.
In acknowledgment of the Brazilian’s crucial role in the Champions League victory, Klopp said that save was his favorite.
The Liverpool manager also mentioned Alisson as his favorite goal. He was obviously alluding to the goalkeeper’s dramatic header in May 2021 that gave the team a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion.
Up until the final stretch, when Liverpool unexpectedly made it into the top four with a string of crucial victories—none more so than at the Hawthorns—the 2020–21 campaign was one to forget.
