Alan Shearer apologises for mistake on BBC after being called out after Man Utd’s defeat to Fulham

In response to a mistake that he made while covering Manchester United’s elimination from the FA Cup for the BBC, Alan Shearer has issued an official apology to a player.

United was eliminated from the FA Cup on Sunday evening, effectively ending their chances of playing in European football the following season. This was due to the fact that Fulham custodian Bernd Leno saved two penalties during a dramatic shootout that ended with a score of 4-3.

Due to the fact that Newcastle United were eliminated from the competition shortly before, following an exciting match against Brighton and Hove Albion at St. James Park, the job of Newcastle legend Shearer, who was providing commentary for United’s match, became significantly more challenging.

Due to the fact that Shearer was called out for a significant error that occurred during his coverage of the match, he was compelled to issue an apology on the internet. Unfortunately for Shearer, things got even worse.

The visitors were able to take the lead before halftime thanks to an impressive header from Fulham defender Calvin Bassey. However, United captain Bruno Fernandes scored a heroic equaliser late in the match, which forced the match to go into extra time before the final whistle.

Shearer was asked to name his man of the match before extra time could begin, and despite the fact that he had a stellar performance, he chose to go with Fernandes rather than Bassey. This decision has been met with controversy.

During an episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer shared his thoughts on Calvin Bassey, saying, “I thought he was very good.” When it comes to the man of the match award, the issue is that you have to announce it five minutes before the game is over. I’m wondering, “What am I supposed to do?” In order to avoid the penalties, I have to give it to you.

According to my understanding, Bruno has brought Manchester United back into the game by providing them with the one piece of quality that they required. They were dragged into it by him, and he was the one who was playing all of these probing passes over them.

“But if I had been able to wait until after the penalties, then it might have gone to Leno, and perhaps it should have gone to Calvin Bassey, who I thought was absolutely fantastic at center-half,” the player said.

Micah Richards, who is also a co-host on the podcast, then attacked Shearer, asserting that Bassey was deserving of the award but was not given it because defenders are typically overlooked for awards.

“I send my apologies to Calvin Bassey, then,” Shearer said, who concurred with the statement. Man of the match should have been awarded to him. “There you have it.”

The magnificent victory that Fulham achieved over United secured their spot in the quarterfinals, where they will play host to their rivals from London, Crystal Palace, on March 29.
