Mason Greenwood, a former forward for Manchester United, has had a successful start to his career with Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille team; nevertheless, recent rumours indicate that the former England international may be fired by the French team this summer.
After being suspended by the Red Devils due to domestic abuse allegations, the Carrington graduate played on loan at Getafe throughout the 2023–2024 season. In the summer of 2024, he was on the shopping lists of numerous European clubs.
Born and reared in Bradford, Greenwood has been a regular for Les Phoceens ever since the aforementioned Marseille emerged victorious in the battle for his signature. But why would Greenwood’s stay in the south of France come to an end in the summer?
Greenwood’s strength has emerged this season alone. He has scored 16 goals and provided three assists in 28 games in all competitions, helping Marseille secure second place, 19 points behind Paris Saint-Germain, who are atop the table.
Although his goal-scoring prowess has guaranteed Marseille a spot in the Champions League, De Zerbi’s recent comments imply that things are not all sunshine and flowers at the Stade Velodrome, thus more is needed of the winger.
I admire him more than anyone else can. However, that doesn’t alter the fact that I have higher expectations for him. What he is doing now is insufficient; he needs to do more. He needs to be more consistent, make more sacrifices, and have more resolve if he is to fulfil his dream of being a champion.

The French publication RMC Sport claims that he has lost favour under De Zerbi’s leadership due to his negative attitude and that he could be sold in the summer if he doesn’t react well to De Zerbi’s remarks.
The ‘lack of effort’ and ‘nonchalance’ that surround Greenwood are also reportedly present. According to RMC reporter Florent Germain, via BFM Marseille, if the former England international’s relationship with the tactician isn’t fixed, his future may be in doubt.
He is a player who has the ability to make a significant impact, but to be honest, if he doesn’t respond, there will be speculation that he might leave for Greenwood this summer.
Speaking out about Greenwood in February, the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager identified his corner-taking prowess as the one thing that “annoys” him the most. He remarked, “Greenwood is not an expert on corners.”
One of Pep Guardiola’s most possible successors at Manchester City, De Zerbi, claimed he is overly intent on scoring goals. He is goal-focused, but he has the potential to become one. He acts much like this as he tries to turn a corner. And I find that annoying.
Before Marseille, teams like Barcelona, PSG, and Juventus were listed as interested parties. If they or another team decide to reinvest their time and resources, Manchester United will be in serious trouble because they included a 50% sell-on clause in his contract.
