Summary Romelu Lukaku is attempting to restart his career in Italy under former boss Antonio Conte.
The striker has been in good form for Napoli this season.
Lukaku has achieved a feat that only one other player in Europe’s top five leagues has managed this year.
The career of Romelu Lukaku is a fascinating one. The Belgian has, at different periods in his footballing career, been one of the most devastating number nines in the world and has commanded an accumulation of hefty transfer fees. He has played for some of the top teams across England and Italy and is also his country’s record goalscorer, with 88 goals in 122 games.
On the flip hand, when things haven’t worked out for the 31-year-old, it’s often been to the extreme. After costing Chelsea £100 million, his second term there was a complete bust. With pay that demands elite performance, he has become a hazardous player to sign. Add in his two-year stint at Manchester United, which couldn’t end soon enough.
The Belgian was back in Serie A at the beginning of the 2024–2025 season, this time with Napoli, where he was reunited with old boss Antonio Conte. Lukaku’s season has been fascinating to watch, ending in a milestone that only one other player in Europe’s top five leagues has accomplished this year. Other former Premier League players, such as Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour, are thriving in the same club.
Lukaku Makes an Outstanding Goal Contribution feat
In addition to finding the net, the striker has been supporting his teammates.

In spite of his terrible record against the Premier League’s “big six,” Lukaku has established himself as a consistent source inside the 18-yard box. This season, however, he has displayed a different side to his game. Lukaku has only scored 21 goals in 102 games against the Premier League’s “big six.” The former Everton player has made 32 appearances across all competitions so far this term and has scored just 12 goals, which may not be the most exciting total given that he has managed 20+ in all but one of his seasons in Italy. He has also recorded 11 assists, making him one of the top providers in Europe.

Only Mohamed Salah of Liverpool can actually claim to have scored ten goals and provided ten assists this season while competing in one of the top five leagues in Europe. Given that the Egyptian is having what many would consider a Ballon d’Or-winning campaign, it is impressive that Lukaku can stand alone as his only competitor in such a category, even though the two players’ combined totals aren’t comparable (Salah’s 55 G/A in all competitions to Lukaku’s 23).
Consequently, Napoli has been able to maintain a close lead over Inter Milan at the top of the Serie A standings. With six games remaining, the top two are separated by just three points.
Antonio Conte has managed to get Lukaku to function as a crucial component of his system, even though he may not be as vicious as he once was and some people still doubt his general technical skill.
We examined the most costly strikers in history because money is king in the contemporary game.
How Lukaku Has Been Bestowed by Conte
Under the Italian, the Belgian has produced his best work.

Players just perform better under certain managers, as history has demonstrated. And the situation between Lukaku and Conte is obvious. Under the Italian’s leadership, the striker has contributed 103 goals in 127 games. How, therefore, has he once again connected with the frontman?
The Belgian remembered in a 2024 interview that he has streamlined Lukaku’s game, which appears to be a contributing factor:
“Listen to me, you can’t hold the ball for too long in my playing system; you have to give it back right away,” he stated directly to my face. Conte is able to do this by fostering a partnership of sorts among the players. This also applies to McTominay.
“He’s truly the correct one, and I think his coaching style is excellent. That’s the lovely thing about him. how he unifies the group.”
Most significantly, Conte is able to maintain the satisfaction of his number nine. In his career, Lukaku has been criticised far too much, something his new management believes bothers him too much. He has freed him from his bonds by reducing his responsibilities, and the results are already evident.
