WHAT ON GOD’S GREEN EARTH DID WE JUST SEE!! 🤯 💥 Champions League has GOT to be the most corrupt league I’ve ever seen! 💥

Real Madrid supporters were left completely incensed on one of the most contentious nights in recent Champions League history, and football fans worldwide are still attempting to understand the myriad injustices that transpired at the Santiago Bernabéu. What should have been a valiant attempt at a comeback against Arsenal instead became a night filled with annoyance, VAR disputes, and officiating calls that made no sense.

Madrid’s atmosphere was electrifying. Los Blancos knew they needed to come up with something exceptional after losing the first leg 3-0. And it appeared as though the miracle could be happening for a time. The moment that might have altered everything arrived when Kylian Mbappé ran through Arsenal’s midfield and was hauled down by Declan Rice inside the box. The players were pumped up, and the spectators cheered with belief.

A blatant punishment? Everyone believed that. The referee indicated the location. The audience burst out. However, VAR stepped in just as Mbappé grabbed the ball and put it on the spot. There was a lengthy, excruciating wait of more than six minutes. Then, surprisingly, the ruling was overturned. According to UEFA, there was no contact that warranted a foul. The stadium’s patrons were in disbelief. The pundits couldn’t say anything. Social media took off.

However, the unfairness continued after that.

Shortly afterward, the Bernabéu was silenced by an exquisite chip that Bukayo Saka scored over Thibaut Courtois, which can only be characterised as a masterstroke. But Real Madrid was not going to back down. Vinicius Jr. answered right away, reminding everyone that there was still battle to be fought on this side. Madrid needed two more goals to force extra time with the score at 1-1 that evening. The faith had returned.

But as time passed, Arsenal’s dark arts became more relevant. Cruel tackles, particularly against Madrid’s wingers and midfielders, went unpunished. They clattered Luka Modrić close to the midway line. Jude Bellingham was the recipient of an unconventional horror challenge. However, VAR and the on-field officials didn’t even bat an eye.

Not only were Madrid supporters angry, they were furious. Two of the tackles were risky in addition to being late. Red cards may have easily been imposed for both. Vinicius even suffered a slight injury scare as a result of one, limping for a few minutes before he recovered. Nevertheless, VAR remained mute as the referee waved play on.

Then, as though fate had a sick sense of humour, the ultimate blow arrived, with Arsenal’s second goal deep into stoppage time thanks to Gabriel Martinelli. Shortly later, the final whistle blew, securing Arsenal’s 5-1 aggregate triumph and 2-1 victory on the night. However, the chaos and unfairness that had preceded it were not reflected in the scoreboard.

Every prominent commentator and former football player in the post-match analysis was shocked. The same opinion was expressed by Jamie Carragher, Cesc Fabregas, and even former referee Mark Clattenburg: the officiating was shameful. Players were not protected by the VAR protocols. Additionally, Real Madrid lost out on what could have been a spectacular comeback.

The seeming contradiction enrages Madrid supporters even more. Why were Arsenal’s similar moments not even checked, while their penalty was overturned following a protracted review? Why did Madrid players receive tickets for infractions but Arsenal’s careless challenges went unpunished? Does officiating in Europe have a double standard?

The criticism of UEFA’s officiating has been levelled previously. Conspiracy theories have flourished in the Champions League due to phantom offsides and ghost penalties. Furthermore, the match from last night simply fuelled the flames.

Before the final whistle, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez reportedly bounded out of his VIP box. According to club sources, he would formally complain to UEFA about the officiating that night. It’s unclear if that will result in any action, but it’s a definite sign that Madrid won’t be taking this lying down.

In his press conference after the game, Carlo Ancelotti, who was clearly disappointed, also didn’t hold back. “In my decades of playing this game, I have never witnessed VAR used so carelessly,” he remarked. We weren’t only playing Arsenal tonight; we were also playing against injustice.

Despite their heartbreak, Madrid’s players carried themselves with pride as they departed the pitch. The fans cheered them on because they persevered through hardship rather than because they won. They displayed character in spite of the odds and the officiating circus.

However, there are still questions.

How can UEFA let such officiating standards to continue in the most prominent club championship in the world? If VAR is unable to identify fouls that could endanger a player’s career, what good is it? Which is worse, subpar refereeing or a flawed system that permits it to thrive?

Football is an intense, accurate, and equitable game. However, it seemed as though all three were left behind last night.

The entire globe witnessed it. Madrid witnessed it. And perhaps the game itself is in jeopardy if UEFA keeps ignoring it.

The Champions League might never be the same again, that much is clear.

Even though Real Madrid lost the match, football as a whole took the largest hit last night.
