What Jose Mourinho has told ‘confidants’ about Man Utd return as new favourite emerges to replace Ruben Amorim

Mourinho led United from 2016 until 2018.

Jose Mourinho has already spoken with ‘confidants’ about a return to Manchester United, with a new favourite forming to succeed Ruben Amorim as manager.

Amorim has been in charge of United since December, succeeding Erik ten Hag.

However, United dropped to 15th place in the Premier League table and lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final.

The team invested heavily this summer on attacking reinforcements, however the goalkeeping position has yet to be solved.

United fans have also demanded for the signing of a new central midfielder, as the club is currently unable to offload ‘bomb squad’ players Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Tyrell Malacia.

Amorim’s squad had only one point from their first two Premier League games, losing 1-0 to Arsenal and drawing 1-1 with Fulham.

The Red Devils were more proactive in both games and had a greater attacking threat than last season, but, as is typical of United managers, pressure is gradually building on Amorim.

According to the latest odds, former England manager Gareth Southgate is a joint favourite with Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner to take over if a change occurs at Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick, who was fired by Championship club Middlesbrough in the summer, is next at 5/1, with USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino and Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna after him.

Interestingly, Mourinho is not one of the candidates predicted to be the next United manager, although Betfair placed him as the favourite at the conclusion of last season if Amorim had left.

Meanwhile, The Sun reports that he is being considered by Nottingham Forest if his compatriot Nuno Espirito Santo quits the club.

The Manchester Evening News reported in March that Mourinho, who is still in charge of Turkish Super Lig team Fenerbahce, had not fully ruled out a return to Old Trafford.

He is alleged to have told confidants that he would ‘walk’ back to Manchester and would like to return to the team he managed from 2016 to 2018.

However, he has publicly supported Amorim’s success at Old Trafford, noting in a recent interview: “I think we all agree he is a coach with great potential and character.”

“With stability, I think he has in hands an incredible potential to do a great job at Manchester United.”

Mourinho led United to second place in the Premier League in 2017/18 and, despite winning the Champions League and other domestic league and cup wins over his career, described it as one of his ‘greatest achievements’.

“If I tell you that finishing second in the Premier League with Manchester United was one of the best jobs I’ve ever had, you’ll think I’m crazy. He won 25 titles, and he claims that finishing second was one of his proudest accomplishments?” he told beIN Sports.

“I keep saying this because people don’t understand what’s going on behind the scenes. And occasionally we, on this side of the cameras, analyze things from a different angle.”
