Liverpool are paying Newcastle United a’solidarity’ fee to recruit Alexander Isak. What exactly constitutes a’solidarity’ payment?
Following months of speculation this summer, Liverpool has finally secured an agreement to buy Isak from Newcastle.
Despite landing his dream transfer to Anfield, he is poised to miss out on millions of pounds.
The transaction is for a stunning £130 million, a British record sum that exceeds Chelsea’s £106 million signing of Enzo Fernandez in January 2023.
The plan includes a £5 million payout for’solidarity’.
£5 million has been set aside for teams that helped develop and contribute to the Swede’s training from the ages of 12 to 23.
That means AIK of Sweden, Willem II of the Eredivisie, Borussia Dortmund of the Bundesliga, and Real Sociedad of La Liga will all earn a tiny sum of money from the purchase.
Newcastle could also pocket a percentage of the’solidarity’ payment, as Isak joined the club at the age of 22.
Isak started his football career with AIK. He progressed through the club’s youth academy before breaking into the first team.
He then joined Dortmund, where he played on loan for Willem II in the Netherlands’ top flight.
The 25-year-old signed with Sociedad in the summer of 2019 before joining Newcastle for £63 million.
Isak scored 62 goals in 109 matches for Newcastle, including 23 goals in 32 Premier League games last season.
Given Liverpool’s firepower, he will expect an even greater haul this season, despite missing the opening three league games of the season.
Isak, who did not participate in Newcastle’s preseason, has not appeared in any of the club’s opening three league games this season.
However, he has been nominated to Sweden’s squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo.
He is expected to play several minutes before joining Liverpool, which will resume their season on September 14 against Burnley.
Liverpool has won all three of their opening league games of the current season.
