As was the case on Saturday, Paul Mullin was not included in the matchday squad for Wrexham’s match against Bolton, which ended in a scoreless draw.
A total of four of the club’s most recent five League One matches have been played without Mullin being included in Phil Parkinson’s squad at any point.
The fact that the striker played such an important part in the team’s ascent through the Football League has caused some fans to be left in a state of shock as a result of this.
He led Wrexham to promotion from the National League to the English Football League, and then he assisted in securing a spot in League One for the team during the previous season.
As a result of his arrival in 2021, the 30-year-old player has become one of the club’s most recognisable faces and has scored more than one hundred goals.
To the extent that co-owner Ryan Reynolds even cast him in the role of Welshpool in the most recent Deadpool movie for him to appear in.
On the other hand, it appears that Mullin’s fairytale has come to an abrupt end, as he has now found himself on the periphery of the team.
According to what was stated, he has had a difficult time gaining playing time in the third division of English football. Since January 28, he has not participated in any league game at all, and he has only made nine starts throughout the entire season, scoring three goals.
After coming off the bench during the week, Mullin was able to participate in the semi-finals of the English Football League trophy with Peterborough United.
On the other hand, that was a nightmare appearance for him, as he failed to make his penalty kick in the shootout, which led to the team’s defeat to Peterborough and put an end to the Wembley dream of the club’s owners, Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
After missing a penalty kick just a few days earlier, Mullin was once again not included in the squad on Saturday, which caused fans to question his possible absence.
“Has Mullin been injured or just dropped the past few league games?” a fan asked on X. “Has Mullin been dropped lately?”
Someone else posed the question, “What went wrong with Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin?”
On the other hand, a third supporter hypothesised that “something has definitely happened between Mullin and Parkinson.”
While this was going on, a fourth person wrote, “Mullin is not even on the bench, and it appears that he is on the naughty step for missing his penalty!”
It would appear that Manager Parkinson favours various other striker options, and he certainly had a good number of them available to him.
Record signing for the club Since his arrival in January, Sam Smith has been starting up front alongside Jay Rodriguez. Together, they have been playing forward.
Additionally, Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher, a former forward in the Premier League, are both members of the formidable attacking group within the team.
This has resulted in Mullin falling further down the pecking order, and it is possible that the transition to League One will be too much for him to handle.
At the beginning of the season, he had been sidelined with an injury, which caused him to miss a number of games after he had surgery on his back.
On top of that, he then experienced a problem with his shin, but he has since recovered and is now able to play, as evidenced by the fact that he is participating in the EFL Trophy.
The manager has made it abundantly clear that he is absent on purpose, and as a result, his future at Wrexham is currently being called into question.
“For me, there’s something not right,” Waynne Phillips, a former midfielder for the Red Dragons, said in an interview with the BBC.
“It seems a little bit crazy that Paul Mullin is not present and active with the team,” said the coach. It is Phil Parkinson who serves as the manager.
“He has done particularly well for Wrexham over the last two or three seasons, and you have to accept that he is the man who picks the side.”
The next game for Wrexham is scheduled to take place on Tuesday evening, and it will be a trip to Huddersfield, another team that is vying for promotion.
With a victory, Mullin’s team has the potential to move into the top two of the standings, so he will be hoping to be included in the squad for that match.
They are currently in third place in League One, two points behind the places that are predetermined for automatic promotion.
