What Happened to ex-West Ham Wonderkid Reece Oxford

Because of the way Premier League teams operate their academy systems, there is no assurance that a player will get a chance to play for the first team or, in other situations, establish himself as a regular member of the squad. Sometimes the disparity in skill is too great.

Even so, supporters are still giddy with anticipation whenever a young player is benched or, better yet, makes their debut. As a result, we offer to you the intriguing case of Reece Oxford, the former West Ham United wonderkid.

The Hammers, who are based in east London, have one of the best academies in Premier League history, and players like Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, and Joe Cole support their standing. For the previously mentioned Oxford, however, it didn’t quite work out.

Supporters will recall the exuberant excitement that surrounded his debut; he was compared to none other than Rio Ferdinand and was ranked higher than Declan Rice, who is currently regarded as one of the best midfielders in world football. However, what took place?

The Life of Oxford at West Ham
Declan Rice’s rise was hampered by his injuries.

Oxford made a big impression on many elite clubs after playing his first Premier League match against none other than Arsenal as a youthful teenager (he was 16 at the time). It appeared as though he would soon receive a significant break.

The adolescent sensation, who managed to conceal the talismanic trio of Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, and Santi Cazorla, attracted attention by stealing the show in the engine room.

The adaptable Oxford, who was ranked among England’s top youngsters in 2016, made seven league games during the 2015–16 season but ultimately found it difficult to establish himself as a regular player, whether it was in the action or in the middle of midfield.

Amazingly, Oxford was seen to be the team’s most exciting talent. He can play at the base of midfield or in the middle of a back four. And given that Rice was also listed on the club’s books, that is an extremely high compliment.

Rice has become a vital part of both Arsenal and England after moving across London from West Ham to Arsenal in the summer of 2023. Naturally, the same cannot be said for Oxford, his countryman.
It’s difficult to pinpoint the precise moment and location of Oxford’s downfall, but former Hammers manager Slaven Bilic believes that Rice’s ascent to fame contributed to Oxford’s decline into mediocrity.

Regarding Rice’s situation, Bilic said that “being a little under the radar helped him.” “When I first arrived at West Ham a few years ago, I couldn’t go anywhere without hearing that Reece Oxford wasn’t going to be the next big thing.

“You can imagine the excitement when we defeated Arsenal 2-0 and Reece made his debut at the age of 16. He was accompanied, sustained injuries, and perhaps lost some of his focus and confidence.

“Dec’s was a different story,” he added. He might enter without the same preconceptions. I recall seeing him with his parents while strolling around the hotel during the preseason in Germany. I spoke with them after they came over to see him, and they didn’t appear to want a big deal. A young player is not harmed by such things.

An Analysis of Oxford’s Career After West Ham
Due to ongoing injury issues, he made his final appearance in March 2023.

Many people, even West Ham supporters, might not be aware that Oxford started his career in Tottenham Hotspur’s youth system before moving to the capital in July 2011 and going on to become one of the most sought-after players in English football.

Oxford had an interesting but quite perplexing time at the club. He spent the second half of the 2016–17 season on loan at Reading, an English club, before playing for Borussia Monchengladbach and FC Augsburg in Germany.
He only performed eight times for the former and was unable to make an impression. In 2019, he left east London after being permanently signed by Augsburg. He was prepared to secure a starting position elsewhere after jumping ship with a total of appearances across all competitions.

But his lack of fitness has kept him from developing into the modern-day Ferdinand that he was always meant to be. A five-cap England U20 player, he had a muscle injury that kept him out of action for the whole 2023–2024 season.

According to a Fox News story from July 2023, “He struggled with knee, thigh, and COVID-related problems.” In the off-season, the defender is currently looking for specialised assistance in London. Because of the numerous problems and how they are impeding his recuperation, there is no set timetable for his return.

Furthermore, he has yet to return. In March 2023, he made his final appearance for FC Augsburg II, the German team’s reserves. In the 78th minute, he was sent off despite recording an assist, and his name kept getting worse.

Of course, Oxford, who was born in London, still has time to change his ways at the age of 26. Unfortunately, he is eager to return to the spotlight. He wrote on Instagram, “Back on the pitch, back in the mix.” Dedicated, productive, and prepared for the future.
