In brief
Throughout their history, Liverpool has been fortunate to have a number of elite finishers.
An academy star was once regarded by Robbie Fowler as one of the best he had ever seen.
Since Fowler’s praise, the young player’s career has been turbulent.
Any Liverpool team will undoubtedly have someone who knows where the goal is, if there’s one thing you can be sure of. Over the years, Anfield has been honoured with some genuinely amazing number nines, including Luis Suarez, Ian Rush, and Fernando Torres. There is usually a way to relieve the pressure on the Reds in front of goal, even at challenging times.
Robbie Fowler is one of the best of those, though. The former England international finished his Liverpool career with 183 goals in 369 games, the seventh-highest total in the club’s history, and was praised for his skill within the 18-yard box. Few people are more knowledgeable than him about what makes a great striker, and since he has experience as a manager and young coach, you would think he would be able to recognise a promising finisher when he sees one.
Adam Morgan, a former Liverpool player who was described as “one of the best finishers” the Kop legend had ever seen, was one name that Fowler did approve. But the course of his career would be quite different from what Fowler’s remarks indicated.
Fowler’s Praise of Youngster Morgan
The Liverpool legend was impressed with what he had seen
In an interview with the Liverpool club website in 2012, during their preseason tour of North America in preparation for the 2012–13 campaign, Fowler expressed his admiration for the young player after he scored a goal in a preseason friendly against FC Toronto.
The former Manchester City and Leeds United player waxed poetic over the promising young player, even bestowing upon him the highest accolades:
“In my opinion, he is an excellent goal scorer. Last year, while I was coaching, I had the good fortune to train with him at the Academy. He has excellent finishing skills and is a very left-footed player. He is calm in front of the goal, and Rushie would agree, saying that you will have a chance if you are calm and patient in front of the goal.
“Regardless of your skill level, I think it’s fantastic that he never appears upset. Being a young man, he still has a lot to learn about playing unconventionally, but that will happen. To be honest, he is probably among the best finishers I have seen in a very long time.
For Morgan, who would later make his debut that season in a Europa League qualifying match against Hearts, it was undoubtedly a bright beginning to life in and around the senior setup. Although he would be a late substitute in this match, he was given a start at Anfield in the return leg, starting with Jamie Carragher, Jordan Henderson, Suarez, and Steven Gerrard.
Later in the competition, he would also start against Yuri Zhirkov and Samuel Eto’o in a loss to the Russian team Anzhi Makhachkala. He would, however, make no more appearances for the team, and in January 2014, after signing a loan agreement with the team a few months earlier, he would depart to sign a permanent contract with Yeovil Town.
Adam Morgan’s Career Now
The 30-year-old plays in the Northern Premier West Division
Morgan would go on to have a journeyman career at the lower levels of English football after joining Yeovil and briefly playing for St Johnstone. He would play for Halifax Town, Hemel Hempstead, and Accrington Stanley. He also relocated to Wales and Ireland to play for Sligo Rovers and Colwyn Bay, respectively.
Morgan has played for ten different clubs overall, according to Transfermarkt’s data, albeit there are more that he has signed with for which no data is available. He joined Runcorn Linnets in October 2024 and is presently playing for them. He even gained experience on the pitch during his tenure as assistant manager of Clitheroe FC in 2022.
