What Happened to Adam Lewis, the Liverpool Youngster Steven Gerrard Lauded

In brief
Steven Gerrard once predicted that Adam Lewis, a former Liverpool youth, would succeed.
The defender never featured for the team again after making his debut in 2020.
Lewis might now face expulsion from the Football League.
In football, there are no guarantees. Just 1% of athletes go on to play professionally. These are only a few of the corny phrases that are directed at young gamers who are attempting to get into the game, and regrettably, the reason they are used so frequently is because they are accurate. It’s possible for players who appear to have endless potential to just fluff their lines and not fully utilise their talent.

The strain that these wonderkids may experience is not helpful. There are moments when a player feels like they are carrying the entire globe on their shoulders due to the enthusiasm surrounding them. One may argue that this was the case with Ravel Morrison at Manchester United, who Sir Alex Ferguson had predicted would be a huge success. Receiving the same accolades from someone like Steven Gerrard would be the same for a young player from Liverpool.

Adam Lewis, a former Reds defender, was treated just like that. Lewis, a full-back by trade, excelled in the Melwood academy and had a lot of promise. So much so that legend Gerrard identified him as a potential star. After receiving that public support, things haven’t exactly gone as planned years later.

Gerrard’s Praise of Adam Lewis

The Liverpool legend claimed that the defender was ‘the best he had seen’ at his age

Gerrard worked as a youth coach at his boyhood club to get experience on the pitch before beginning his professional managerial career at Rangers. In 2017, he was elevated to the position of manager of the under-18 team. He first encountered Lewis, who was rising through the ranks, during this time in his career.

Gerrard was obviously impressed by the rising young star right away, and he gave the Liverpool Echo arguably the highest compliment he could muster when he said that the defender was the best player he had ever seen in that age group, even better than he was when he made his debut in the first team:

“Throughout the entire season, Adam has been doing it for us. All along, I have been praising him. Adam won’t be on this team for very long if he can maintain his consistency.

“He’s such a menace on the left side, but I want to keep him for as long as possible. He is the best player I have ever seen at that age in terms of talent and what he can do in the last third.

In a 2017 interview with the club’s website, Lewis stated that making his first team debut was his dream. In 2020, he played the full ninety minutes in a 1-0 FA Cup victory over Shrewsbury Town, fulfilling that dream in front of the Kop. But he was forced to settle for football considerably further down the pyramid after that, and that would be his sole appearance for the senior team.

Lewis’s Career Away From Liverpool

The defender made a permanent move away in 2024

Lewis had multiple loan stints while still under contract with the Reds in order to get more first-team experience, including with Livingston, Plymouth Argyle, and French team Amiens. He didn’t truly make an impression until he joined Newport County, where he played for two seasons and produced some exceptional performances, including an FA Cup assist against Manchester United.

Given how unlikely a future at Liverpool was, it appeared likely that he would sign a long-term contract with County. He would, however, instead complete a free transfer to Morecambe, who are presently at the bottom of League Two in a relegation battle.

With two appearances at this level and many more in lower age groups, Lewis’s international accolades reached the level of the England under-20 squad.
