Southampton striker Adam Armstrong has spoken out against the Saints’ players’ mindsets this season, and fans have quickly noticed the contradiction in what he is saying.
Southampton fans are furious. Their squad, which was only relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, has slipped into the Championship relegation zone. They’ve only won once in the league since the season’s first weekend. Will Still’s departure has left the team without a manager.
This season was not supposed to go like this for the team. One small consolation for relegation is that your team will do substantially better at a lower level the next season.
However, despite the appointment of a promising young manager and major investment in the team over the summer, this new group of players has shown little sign of chemistry.

Adam Armstrong, who has made over 150 appearances for the club since joining from Blackburn Rovers in 2021, has become a beloved character at St Mary’s, but that doesn’t mean everything he says will be well accepted.
George Rees-Julian, a Southampton reporter for the Southern Daily Echo, has uploaded a message by the striker to the social media platform X, causing concern among club fans.
The keen-eyed among you may have noticed the underlying inconsistency in Armstrong’s statement, as did Saints supporters.
Others noted the irony of this coming from the team’s captain, who they may have believed was partially responsible for motivating the players in the first place.
Some even used the chance to criticize Armstrong’s efforts in a Southampton shirt this season.
Southampton fans have been angry with more than just Will Still this season.
Southampton fans are understandably upset with the team’s performance in the 2025-26 season, as this is not an unfamiliar position for them. Their team concluded previous season with 12 points, ten behind second-bottom Ipswich Town and 26 points away from safety.
And, while no one has a right to anything in sports, fans who pay hundreds of pounds per year for a season ticket and have just seen their team lose 15 of 19 home games may have expected things to improve this time around.
However, there have been little indications of this so far. Their opening weekend success over Wrexham required two very late goals to secure all three points, and since then the Saints have only won once in the League, an away win against a Sheffield United team dealing with their own psychodrama.
Will Still has departed. However, many Saints fans believe that the club’s problems go well beyond him. They appear to be in decline since Sport Republic took over the club in early 2022, with little evidence that the darkness is lifting.
When supporters are dissatisfied, even the most sincere comments can be interpreted negatively. Prior to his departure, Southampton supporters were upset with more than just their manager. As the squad begins their search for their third manager in 2025, they will need to make the right decision.
Adam Armstrong may be about to discover that Saints fans are more upset with Southampton’s collapse than their expensively assembled collection of players, as well as a lack of direction in the Championship from a team that was once a Premier League mainstay.
