He’s been linked to Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea in recent times.
According to a fresh rumor, the race to sign Viktor Gyokeres has a clear frontrunner, as one of this summer’s most talked-about transfer sagas comes to a close… finally.
Gyokeres is still one of the most sought-after strikers in world football right now. The 26-year-old Swedish international, who has 97 goals in 102 outings for Sporting CP, is still attracting interest from many of Europe’s elite clubs.
Last month, Portuguese newspaper A Bola said Arsenal were the best-placed club to recruit Gyokeres after he was asked “if he likes London” during a post-match interview, while Chelsea made a formal request to Sporting about his availability in May.
Serie A giants Juventus has also approached the Portuguese club about a possible transfer, but it appears that a reunion with previous boss Ruben Amorim is on the cards as Manchester United continues their search for a prolific centre-forward.
According to The Sun, United are poised to beat Arsenal to the acquisition of Gyokeres, with Sporting willing to accept a cost of around £60 million for the prolific Swede.
The study also detailed United’s most recent quarterly club accounting, which included decreases in the player salary bill, among other cost-cutting measures, allowing the club to bolster their team this summer.
Gyokeres is reported to have changed his mind on a move to United after initially being concerned about their inability to qualify for next season’s Champions League, according to The Mirror, which suggests a transfer is now a ‘real possibility’.
Arsenal is searching elsewhere amid ties with Gyokeres.
Arsenal are also looking for a new striker this summer, but it appears Gyokeres is no longer their main priority.
In reality, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners are “advancing” in negotiations for RB Leipzig attacker Benjamin Sesko, with “discussions underway and proceeding well” among all parties concerned.
United has also been monitoring Sesko’s position recently. We believe that the club made preliminary enquiries with his representatives this summer, but it looks that he will be moving to North London.
On the topic of Gyokeres, the Swede was questioned about his future after winning the double with Sporting.
“Let us see,” he stated. “It’s difficult for me to say because, yes, it is football, and you never know what’s going to happen in the summer. So I can’t say anything else.”
“I don’t know; I’m just focused on this. I’ve tried to concentrate on the recent games because they’re so important, and I don’t want to worry about anything else. So, if anything is real, we’ll see in the summer.
