Alejandro Garnacho’s goal against Brighton was disallowed due to the unintentional offside of his Manchester United teammate, Joshua Zirkzee.
Brighton will face Manchester United in the Premier League.
Garnacho believed that he had given his team a 2-1 lead.
The goal was invalidated because Zirkzee, a member of the same squad, was in an offside position.
Following Danny Welbeck’s goal in the first half against his former team, which was eventually equalised by Amad Diallo in the 60th minute, Garnacho believed that he had scored to give his team the lead 10 minutes afterwards. Nevertheless, when he successfully scored from an extremely narrow angle, his shot deflected off his teammate and new signing Zirkzee – who coincidentally was positioned in an offside position just a few centimetres away from the goal line. Following an extensive Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, the goal was disallowed and the scoreboard reverted back to 1-1 on Saturday at the Amex stadium.
