Inter Milan’s penalty against Arsenal in the Champions League, according to Ally McCoist, is the most recent indication that the handball rule must be amended promptly.
On Wednesday evening, the Gunners were engaged in a competitive match against Inter at the San Siro, with no clear advantage between the two teams after 45 minutes.
However, the game was abruptly altered when Inter was awarded a penalty in stoppage time after the ball struck Mikel Merino’s palm inside the area.
The ball was lobbed up in front of Merino, and it appeared that he was unable to move his arm out of the way in time, as evidenced by the replays.
The referee promptly pointed to the location, and the video assistant referee (VAR) concurred with the on-field decision.
However, McCoist, who was responsible for providing commentary for TNT Sports during the match, harbored sympathy for the Arsenal player.
“Does it strike his hand?” Certainly,” McCoist declared up front.
“Is his hand separated from his body?” Nothing is known about it by him.
Darren Fletcher, McCoist’s co-commentator, then added, “I am going to refer you to the penalty Manchester City received last night.”
“Haaland missed the penalty, but you are awarded it in the Champions League.” That is no longer available in the Premier League, but it is not available in this competition.
“It evokes memories of your statement from last night and the question of how it is possible for something to be different in different competitions, yet it is.”
McCoist concluded, “It is absurd, is it not?”
“It is impossible to have distinct regulations for the same sport and competition.”
“I merely believe that it is exceedingly severe.” I believe that the law must be altered, and the term “deliberate” should be reinstated.
“That is not intentional.”
In contrast to the guidelines established by UEFA, the Premier League has implemented a more permissive treatment of the handball rule.
