Throughout his career, Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a top-tier football player. He has been playing at a very high level and accomplished some amazing feats throughout the years, seemingly starting the moment he joined the Liverpool team in 2016. After winning the Premier League and the Champions League, he will now play for Real Madrid in Spain to test his mettle.
He hasn’t had it easy either. Having been ranked among the world’s top defenders, Alexander-Arnold has faced the best players the sport has to offer. He has faced players like Bukayo Saka, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo, among others. However, he did not mention any of those men when asked who his hardest opponent was. really, his response was really unexpected.
The Englishman chose to call Brandon Barker, a former Manchester City kid with whom he played junior football, his toughest opponent ever rather than a player he faced during his senior career at Anfield.
Trent Said Barker ‘Destroyed’ Him
He detailed the encounter on Liverpool’s YouTube channel
From someone of Alexander-Arnold’s talent, that’s a really high compliment. However, their lives have since gone somewhat different paths, despite the impression Barker made when they were younger.
They are in completely different locations just a few years later. Barker is playing football in the doldrums of non-league football, while the Liverpool player has agreed to become a galactico and is nearly guaranteed to win another Premier League title by May.
Barker is a non-league football player at the moment.
This year, he joined Avro of the Northern Premier League Division One West.

Alexander-Arnold was confident that Barker will become a world-class player after his performance against Liverpool’s Under-21 team. However, that hasn’t been the case, as he currently plays for Avro, an eighth-tier team in the Northern Premier League Division One West.
Even though he was predicted to do well and his combination of lightning-fast speed and amazing dribbling appeared to virtually ensure success, things haven’t gone as planned.
✍️ Last but not least, we are delighted to announce the signing of Brandon Barker. Brandon brings a wealth of league experience after featuring for clubs such as Man City, Hibernian and Rangers. Barker only played for City’s senior squad once. Before signing a permanent contract with Rangers in 2019, he played on loan at Preston North End, Hibernian, Rotherham United, and NAC Breda. But he didn’t have much of an effect in Scotland, playing just 27 games for the Glaswegian club in three years.
In 2021, he went back to England to try his luck at Reading, but before the end of the 2021–2022 season, he was back on the move after just four games. He then relocated to Cyprus and joined Omonia, but he only made 25 appearances for the team. After failing to impress and going months without a club, he was released in the summer of 2023.
In January 2024, Morecambe gave him a lifeline, but he was also unable to find his footing there. He was once again a free agent after making just two appearances totalling 71 minutes. He is now 28 years old, flaunting his stuff in far more subdued circumstances, and a far cry from the player Alexander-Arnold thought would light up the football world.
